An AI chat like Talkie: 10 apps and their catch

To stay SFW like Talkie, Rubii is a strong pick: a character hub with roleplay, image and video generation, and free Rubies every day you log in. Reviewers describe it as art and chat stitched together, a fit if you'd like to chat with a character and also look at them. Character AI is also SFW, with free and unlimited messaging for all users, ads and a slow mode included.

Joi AI is the pick if you want adult content allowed, with images, video and live video calls on its $13.99 monthly Premium plan.

Apart from Rubii and Character AI, the apps here lean more toward companion chat and allow adult content, some only on paid plans. I like that you can choose the level instead of having it chosen for you. If your characters lean anime, my anime AI chat list is a better start.

After fit comes the free start: Rubii's daily Rubies and Character AI's unlimited messaging beat a fixed handful of messages. Then the cheapest plan worth paying for, whether tokens, coins or Moments sit on top of it, and whether voice is part of the package if you want AI voices. Last, the fine print: renewal, cancelling, refunds and the name on the statement.

None of the entries claims hands-on use. They come from official pages, dated free-tier checks and reviewer reports, and I say which is which. If the story matters more to you than the app's shape, my AI chat roleplay list ranks for that instead.

Free text is where it beats most apps on this page. Messages on the Default model have no cap and no timer, with ads, a possible queue, 4K memory and replies up to 180 tokens. The interface comes in 9 languages, including French, Spanish, German and Korean.

Content works differently from Talkie's SFW rule. The policy allows adult content, but outside reviews say it's off for signed-out visitors and needs two settings on a signed-in account, so you choose the level yourself.

The gap for a Talkie fan is voice. Free accounts get no voice at all, live calls aren't listed on any plan, and spoken replies only come with Im All In at $29.95. Pictures start at True Supporter, $19.95. The first paid step, Get a Taste at $5.95 a month, is about ads, queues and a memory manager.

Memory is its strength by a distance. The homepage presents short, medium and long-term memory as central, and other reviewers describe proactive recall and an automatic "Mind Map" after about 500 messages. That's a very different experience from a hub where you hop between characters.

Voice is there too, on paid plans: in-house and Custom Voices are unlimited on Standard, and ElevenLabs voices depend on your own ElevenLabs plan. One outside review reports a 15-20 second wait before the spoken answer arrives, so it isn't snappy.

The free plan is permanent: 50 messages a day, up to 400 characters each, and 2 images. Standard costs $15.99 a month or $99.99 a year ($8.33 monthly). Adult text is allowed, while images are clothed-only on every tier, from a ready-made set. What fits Talkie less well: there's no public character library, and payments are nonrefundable. For someone leaving Talkie for something more personal, Candy AI is the one-companion option: you build a character and give them a face and a voice.

That's also where reviewers are kindest. They describe generated images and videos as highly realistic, with a character's look staying consistent across generations, and they call the voice and phone-call audio top-tier and expressive. For a companion you want to hear, that's a strong combination.

The free start is a preview only. A free-tier check on 2026-09-22 counted 3-5 messages plus 3-5 images, with no video and no daily reset. Reviewers add that replies are much slower on free, 15-30 seconds against 3-5 seconds on paid. So I'd judge it on its paid plan or not at all.

The paid plans all include the same things: unlimited text messages, custom companions, image and video generation and 100 tokens a month. The 1-Month Plan is €13.99, the 3-Month Plan €26.97, which is €8.99 a month, and the 12-Month Plan €47.88, which is €3.99 a month. That yearly price is one of the lowest on this page, but I'd do a month first.

The catch: memory holds for roughly 10-20 messages and can drop details in longer chats, and about 1 in 8 images come back with visible errors, with no free retry. The refund window for non-EU/UK buyers is 24 hours after payment, which is short. You cancel under Settings / Unsubscribe, and the statement reads EverAI.

The free start is generous and counted. You can browse public characters and start without paying, and the pricing FAQ lists free Rubies: 50 on sign-up, 30 per daily login, 200 with a referral code and 300 for linking Discord or QQ. I like a free tier that rewards coming back.

Plus at $7.99 a month gives 800 Rubies at once, which Rubii says is about 1,600 messages or 400 images, plus 5 free images a day. Pro at $14.99 gives 3,000 Rubies and 15 free images a day. I'd start with Plus.

The catch is billing. Paid plans renew automatically through the app marketplace, and you can only cancel where you bought, since a web cancel path isn't published. Refunds are judged case by case, with no promise either way. Voice calls and group chat aren't in its record, and reviewers say characters remember context from one session to the next. The headline is the price: nothing. The FAQ says free and unlimited messaging stays for ALL users, and the free tier has ads and a slow mode at busy times. You can chat all day without meeting a paywall, which I rate highly.

Paying buys comfort, not access. For $4.99 a month, c.ai lite trims the ads and adds 30 memory pins, while $9.99 a month on c.ai+ clears ads and slow mode entirely and unlocks the highest daily limits. The yearly plan is $94.99, or $7.92 a month, down from $119.88. I'd only pay once slow mode starts to annoy you.

What I'd watch: the terms rule out refunds unless the law demands one, renewals are automatic until you cancel, and one reviewer's cards were declined at c.ai+ checkout for three weeks. The free account is thin, and I'd rather say it plainly. It shows a balance of 10 Neurons, 6 lifetime free image generations stored for 7 days, and free character creation to start. No free-chat message cap could be found. Reviewers call the free chat stiff and forgetful.

Premium is $13.99 a month, with better chat models, improved memory, one free custom-character creation and roughly 50 free images and 5 free videos a month. Reviewers say Premium makes chat warmer and able to hold context across a session, and call the live video calls the most immersive feature, with low latency when they work.

The catch: a picture can stray from the character's look, and a failed render costs Neurons anyway. Subscriptions are generally non-refundable once active. Your statement will say joi.com, which hardly hides anything. To cancel, open My Subscriptions in your account. The free side doesn't match unlimited free chat. You can join and browse free, but chat costs 1 Dreamcoin per message. The help centre says free dreamcoins aren't given by default, while the plan listing mentions 55 to start. If a real free tier is your priority, my free AI chat list will serve you better.

Standard costs $19.99 a month, or $9.99 a month billed at $119.88 a year: unlimited messages with any AI character and 1,000 dreamcoins a month. Deluxe Monthly is $59.99, and Deluxe Annual lists 100 minutes of voice calls, 50 videos and 3x chat memory. I'd buy Standard and see whether you miss voice.

The catch is the coin meter: reviewers say video and voice calls drain coins fast, with one rating voice 3.6/5 for that reason. On the plus side, a 14-day Quality Guarantee exists, though each claim is judged on its own, and you cancel from your profile page. The charge is listed as DREAM STUDIO LLC AL on your statement.

Character AI, Nomi AI and SpicyChat have free plans you can stay on. And long commitments look cheap per month, yet paying for twelve months at once is a gamble on an app you've never tried, so I'd start monthly.

Allowed by policy: Joi AI, OurDream AI, Nomi AI, SpicyChat, Secrets AI and CrushOn AI allow adult content. What matters then is the free allowance you really get: 50 messages a day on Nomi AI, 20 a day on Secrets AI, 100 message credits a month on CrushOn AI, or unlimited text chat with no images on SpicyChat.

Paid plans only: Candy AI and GirlfriendGPT keep adult content for subscribers. Candy AI's lowest monthly rate, €3.99, comes with the 12-Month Plan. GirlfriendGPT's Premium is $15 a month, or $12 a month billed at $144 a year, and includes custom character creation and 5,000 messages a month.

Then the meters. Secrets AI's Premium at $19.99 includes 8,000 Moments a month, and at about 50 Moments per image that's about 160 images. Rubii's Plus gives 800 Rubies, which Rubii says covers about 400 images. OurDream AI's Standard includes 1,000 dreamcoins, and reviewers say video and voice calls use them up fast.

Decide which content level you want first, then pick the cheapest plan that allows it, and pay monthly until you're sure. For the rest of my lists, head to the full top AI app rankings.

The apps side by side, right after this, shows voice calls, group chat, images and video for each app. I'd use it to cross off anything missing the one feature you liked most on Talkie.

My advice: if you want to see your characters, go with Rubii. If you mostly talk, or talk with several characters at once, Character AI costs you nothing to try. And if Character AI is really the app you're comparing against, my Character AI alternatives list goes deeper.

• Discretion. Secrets AI offers an anonymous-signup and crypto-payment option, and two independent reviews scored its privacy 8.5-9/10.
• Statement names. Candy AI bills as EverAI, Nomi AI as NOMI.AI, Secrets AI as S LABS INC., SpicyChat as NDAI.CHAT, GirlfriendGPT as NDAI.CC, CrushOn AI as CRUSHON SUB, Joi AI as joi.com and OurDream AI as DREAM STUDIO LLC AL.
• Reported data use. Reviewers report that CrushOn AI feeds chat logs and personal data into AI training and ads. No official CrushOn AI page confirms it, but I'd keep it in mind.
• Where you cancel. Rubii has no web cancel: you stop the plan in the same app marketplace you bought from. GirlfriendGPT subscribers billed through CCBill cancel on the CCBill website.
• Who runs it. Rubii is run jointly by YoMio Tech Limited and EIGENVECTOR LTD, Joi AI by Novi Limited, Nomi AI by Glimpse.ai, Inc. in Baltimore and Secrets AI by Secret Labs Inc. A named company is the least I expect before paying.

My advice: use a separate email for apps like these, keep your real name and workplace out of your chats, and read each privacy policy before paying.
