The AI chat character apps worth a look, and their catch

If you want a busy character hub that hands out daily credits, Moescape AI gives new users 100 Mochi plus 50 free Mochi a day. If you want the best AI character app for free chat with no cap and don't need adult content, Character AI is SFW only but keeps free messaging unlimited.

Custom characters matter to me for a simple reason: you decide who the character is, instead of taking whatever default an app assumes. If a looser content policy is your first filter, my uncensored AI list fits you better.

Second, the free start: can you meet a character before paying, and is the free limit published as a number? Third, the cheapest plan worth paying for, and whether credits sit on top of it. Fourth, the fine print: renewal, cancel path and refund rule. Content level is stated for every app so you can filter by it yourself.

Character AI is SFW only, Moescape AI has a soft policy, and most of the rest allow adult content.

My own bias: I trust a published number more than a vague promise. "600 messages / day" tells me far more than "free accounts are limited". The entries here are desk research. They're built from official pages, my dated checks of each free tier, and what other reviewers have written. The full method is in how I check the apps.

Moescape AI. Want free chat without a cap, and SFW is fine? Character AI. Want an AI character with no sign-up, and no account either?

Perchance AI Character Chat costs nothing. Want long scenes with lorebooks? HammerAI and Backyard AI both list them. Every app here runs on the web, so each one works as AI character chat in a browser.

What makes it the easy first stop is the free plan. Text chat on the Default model has no cap, paid for by ads, with possible queues, 4K memory and replies of up to 180 tokens. Pictures and voice aren't part of free.

Reviewers rank the free plan among the most generous they tried and call the chat nicely paced and character-driven.

Personas are the other draw: you can step into a scene as someone else, with up to 10 personas on Get a Taste ($5.95 a month, or $60.00 a year), 50 on True Supporter and 100 on Im All In. Get a Taste also drops ads and queues and adds a memory manager.

The catch: users on Trustpilot give it a 2/5 average, citing repetitive replies and logic slips, and fees are non-refundable once the account is used. Every tier is in my SpicyChat review.

Group chat is where it gets playful. Paid accounts can run up to 10 Nomis and 10 group chats at once, and each extra room costs 25 credits. The official pages don't say whether free users get group chat, so I'd count it as paid.

The free plan itself is honest: 50 messages a day, each up to 400 characters, 2 images a day, no ads, and building a Nomi is free. Paid messages run to 800 characters, and the Standard plan costs $15.99 a month or $99.99 a year.

The limits: adult content is allowed in text, but pictures stay clothed on every tier, and reviewers say images come from a ready-made gallery. Nomi's terms rule out refunds, even for unused time. If a cast you design and keep matters to you, my Nomi AI review goes deeper.

What its record doesn't show is group chat: a third-party guide says Premium lets you keep up to 5 characters or storylines going side by side, which means parallel chats, not one shared scene.

Don't expect much for free. Its terms allow free users 5 messages in all, and a check dated 2026-09-22 found 3-5 messages and 3-5 images, with nothing refilling. Adult content waits for a paid plan.

Over time, paying gets cheap: €13.99 for one month with unlimited text and 100 tokens, €8.99 a month on the 3-Month Plan, or €3.99 a month on the 12-Month Plan, billed €47.88 at once. Tokens pay for pictures, calls and video.

Reviewers say a character stays consistent for about 10-20 messages before details slip, so long scenes can wobble. If one character is enough for you, my Candy AI review has the full picture.

The free start is where I get cautious. Soulkyn confirms free accounts exist, but warns that its "ability to offer free accounts is limited", and it publishes no exact free limit. I'd treat free as a look around, not a trial you can plan on.

The price is my main worry. Deluxe, the plan on the official page, costs €49.90 monthly and bundles unlimited 70B-model chat, voice and unlimited pictures, while video is paid per use in Souls. Just Chatting at €11.99 and Premium at €24.99 appear only in third-party reviews, so confirm them at checkout before you count on them.

Other reviewers report that recall keeps one scene together inside a single session, yet fades across weeks, and that the voice sounds flat. For a character you want to grow over months, that matters. My take: great for people who want characters they can see, less so for a long, slow story.

What I like is the free start, because it's counted. The official Mochi guide gives new users 100 Mochi plus 50 daily free Mochi, which expire 24 hours after you claim them. Milestone earnings are capped at 1,000 Mochi per 30 days. A free tier with numbers is a free tier you can judge.

The plan I'd look at first is Pro at $14.99 a month, since it's the one that lists unlimited chat on basic models. Plus at $9.99 mostly buys Mochi and no ads, and the Mochi amounts per plan are disputed between sources, so don't pay for a number you can't confirm.

The catch is credits. Reviewers say Mochi runs out fast when you generate images, rerolls and video, and they call the platform crowded for new users. The content policy is soft, so this isn't the app for fully adult scenes: my NSFW AI chat list covers those. Refunds depend on whether you already used the Mochi or plan benefits. Skip it if you want a quiet, simple app with one character.

Honestly, the free tier is why most people should come here. The c.ai+ FAQ promises "free and unlimited messaging for ALL users", though ads show and a slow mode kicks in when load is high. No daily cap is published, which makes this the easiest unlimited AI chat character on the page.

If what you want is free AI girlfriend chat with unlimited messages, it's the obvious first stop, if romance can stay SFW.

If you pay, the small step is (c.ai) lite for $4.99 a month, with fewer ads and 30 memory pins. c.ai+ costs $9.99 a month and removes both ads and slow mode, and the annual plan at $94.99 works out to $7.92 a month. I'd go monthly first.

Here's what bothers me. Money you pay is not refunded unless a law says otherwise, and one reviewer had cards declined at c.ai+ checkout for three weeks. Other reviewers report strong recall of buried facts, but also invented details stated with the same confidence. If you want romance more than roleplay, my AI girlfriend rankings suit you better. Free access exists, but only in a small, one-off form. There is no standing free plan: new users regularly get one-time free trial credits worth "a few dozen messages". There is also free self-hosting through Kobold or Ooba, which suits tinkerers more than beginners.

The one plan is Mars at $20 a month, with unlimited access to all Chub language models, unlimited voice and unlimited multimedia generation. I like a single flat price with no credit meter. The catch: a secondary source says refunds happen only in exceptional cases, and reviewers mention repetition, including the AI writing both sides of a chat. Its images look noticeably AI-made up close, with an inconsistent character likeness.

My take: a good match if your roleplay tastes are already settled and $20 after a short trial doesn't sting. Pass on it if a proper free plan is a must. To compare it with the other lists on the site, start from my top AI app lists.

So if what you typed into a search box was AI character chat with unlimited messages and no sign-up, this is the literal answer.

The free plan is the only plan. Messages and images are unlimited, with no account, no credits and no paywall, and ads pay for it. Its privacy policy adds that the AI tools are intended to remain free.

If a free AI character is the goal, nothing else here comes close, and I like that there is no upsell waiting for you.

It still does the things this list asks for: memory, custom characters, group chat and image generation are all in its record. Voice calls are not. Its content policy isn't recorded either, so I won't guess at the level.

The catch is polish and long memory. Reviewers say memory held for 30-40 exchanges but lost a plot point about 60 messages back, and that long chats drift even though memory is editable. Reviewers call the stock interface old-fashioned, and say forks made by the community tidy it up. Image quality is serviceable, better in a realistic style than anime, with hands a weak point.

Who should use it? Anyone hunting for AI chat with unlimited messages and no sign-up, before a cent is spent, or anyone who doesn't want an account tied to their chats. I'd start here, then move to a paid app only if memory or looks start to bother you.

For characters you can see, the plans with images or credits matter more than the headline price. And note Soulkyn's Just Chatting and Premium prices: they come from third-party reviews, not the official pricing page. I'd budget from the Deluxe price until Soulkyn confirms them, so a cheaper plan is a nice surprise rather than a letdown.

Flat plans with credits on top: HammerAI's Starter at $9 a month gives unlimited cloud messages and adds 1,500 monthly credits, enough for 150 images or 300 TTS. Advanced at $18 raises that to 3,500 credits, or 350 images. Moescape AI works the same way with Mochi, and reviewers say Mochi goes fast on images, rerolls and video. Soulkyn's Deluxe includes unlimited images at €49.90, but video is paid per use.

Flat plans with everything in: Chub AI's Mars at $20 a month lists unlimited voice and unlimited multimedia generation. CrushChat's Silver at $10 a month lists unlimited messages, images, audio and character creation, and Gold at $20 adds voice calls and twice the memory capacity.

Chat-first plans: Backyard AI's Standard at $12 a month gives unlimited messages on its Standard models, but Backyard AI has no image generation at all. Privee AI Plus lists $8.99 monthly or $49.99 yearly, but the listing never says what you get for it.

My rule: pay for the plan that covers your normal month with a character, not your busiest one, and pay monthly first. Refunds are rare on this list: HammerAI purchases are final, and Character AI only refunds where a law forces it. For one more app's plan-by-plan costs, see my CrushOn AI review.

The apps side by side, right after this, marks which features each app lists. I'd use it to cross off any app missing the one feature your character needs.

My advice: start on Moescape AI's free Mochi to learn what you want from a character. Move to Soulkyn only if you want adult roleplay with images and voice and the price doesn't sting. If neither free start feels like enough, my free AI chat list goes further.

• Who runs it. Soulkyn names Cube Digital Media Ltd., Character AI names Character Technologies, Inc. and HammerAI names Sunspot LLC. Perchance names no legal entity, and CrushChat is run by one private developer, which some evaluators flag as limited transparency.
• Accounts. Perchance AI Character Chat needs no account at all, the most discreet start on the page.
• Who bills you. HammerAI bills through Gank, and WyvernChat has no subscription of its own: paid connections run through Featherless.
• Leaving. On WyvernChat, deleting your account does not cancel a paid Featherless subscription, so cancel that first. Backyard AI lets you cancel whenever you like, and the cancellation kicks in once the paid term runs out.

My advice: build a character, not a copy of yourself. Give the character a rich backstory, but keep your real name, address and workplace out of the chat. Use an email address you keep for apps like these, and read the privacy policy before paying. If an app makes you uneasy, free is the cheapest moment to leave.
