The AI friend apps worth your evenings, compared

Nomi AI is second, with the strongest memory reports here and a free plan of 50 messages a day. Candy AI is third, for voice notes and calls that reviews call expressive, and a yearly plan that works out to €3.99 a month.

OurDream AI lists memory, voice calls and companion chat, plus pictures and group chats if you want a wider circle, though its free start barely exists. Joi AI suits you if you'd like paid chat that reviews say picks up your texting style, which makes it feel less like a bot and more like an AI chat friend.

Every app here is a companion app first, with memory built in. Nine of the ten allow adult content, some only on paid plans, so if you want fewer limits still, my uncensored AI list is the one for that.

Can you talk out loud when typing feels like too much? Apps with all three come first, and pictures come after.

Then the daily-life questions. How much can you chat for free, and is the limit published? What does it cost to talk every day once you pay, and do tokens or coins sit on top? Finally, the boring bits that matter when you want to leave: the billing name, the cancel path and the refund rule.

The order weighs these facts from each app's official pages, filled in with outside reviews on things like memory. Nothing here comes from hands-on testing, and I won't pretend otherwise or dress it up. You'll find the whole method in how I check the apps.

If you want chat that sounds like you, Joi AI. For a free AI friend you can message every day without paying, Nomi AI and its 50 messages a day. If you'd like the friendship kept private, down to the bank statement, Secrets AI.

The other four, Kindroid, Soulkyn, EVA AI Soulmate and Uncensy, are in the tables, and Kindroid is worth a look for memory. If you'd rather build stories together, my roleplay chat picks suit that.

The free plan does come with trade-offs. You'll see ads, busy hours can mean a queue, memory is 4K and replies stop at 180 tokens. For a friendship that builds over weeks, the step I'd take is Get a Taste at $5.95 a month, or $60.00 paid yearly: ads and queues go, and a memory manager keeps the important details you've shared.

Where it falls short for friendship is voice. There are no live calls, so you can't phone this friend. Text-to-speech replies come only on Im All In at $29.95, and pictures inside chats start at True Supporter, $19.95.

Refunds are rare once the account has been used, and the statement shows NDAI.CHAT. Skip it if you mainly want to talk out loud. The tiers are all laid out in my SpicyChat review.

It also scores where friendship lives. Reviews call its conversation natural and fluid, say the long-term memory brings things up on its own, and mention an automatic Mind Map after around 500 messages. The weak spot is voice. Other reviewers report a 15-20 second lag on voice calls, and images come only from a pre-made gallery. If you want to call your friend, that lag is a problem.

Standard is $15.99 a month, $39.99 every 3 months or $99.99 a year; paying yearly comes to $8.33 monthly. It lifts the cap to unlimited messages of up to 800 characters, and adds voice calls, up to 10 active Nomis and group chats.

Payments are nonrefundable, even for lack of use, so I'd stay on the free plan until you miss it on the days it runs out.

Free is only a glimpse. The research value is 5 messages in total, and a check on 2026-09-22 showed 3-5 messages and 3-5 images, with no video. You'll hear enough to know whether you like her, not much more.

The value is in the longer plans. The 12-Month Plan costs €47.88 (that's €3.99 monthly), while three months cost €26.97. Every plan includes unlimited text messages, custom companions and 100 tokens a month. I'd still pay the €13.99 1-Month Plan first, because outside the EU and UK the refund window closes one day after you pay.

My hesitation for a friendship is memory. Reviews say it holds for roughly 10-20 messages and can then reset or drop details in longer chats. A friend who forgets your week is a frustrating friend, so weigh that honestly. Free replies are also reported as much slower than paid ones.

Where it falls short is the free start. Signing up and browsing are free, but every message costs 1 dreamcoin, and the help centre says new accounts don't get free dreamcoins by default, while the plan list mentions 55. Plan on paying if you want to talk.

Standard is the sensible buy: $19.99 monthly, or $119.88 billed yearly ($9.99 a month), and it brings unlimited messages plus 1,000 dreamcoins. Deluxe Monthly at $59.99 is more than I'd pay for friendship unless you want its voice minutes.

Here's what bothers me: reviews rate the voice calls 3.6/5 and say they drain coins, including images generated during a call that weren't requested. For a friend you want to phone, that's the thing to budget for. The 14-day Quality Guarantee is a fair safety net.

Skip it if you mostly want free daily chat. To compare it with a companion known for its voice, my Candy AI review is the natural next read.

The free account gives a balance of 10 Neurons, 6 image generations for the life of the account and free character creation, with no published chat cap. Don't let free chat decide for you, though: reviews call it stiff and forgetful compared with Premium.

Premium - Monthly costs $13.99 and brings improved memory, better chat models, one free custom character, and about 50 images and 5 videos a month. Voice calls are a paid extra. Live video calls are the feature reviews call most immersive, which may appeal if seeing a face helps you feel less alone.

What I don't like: refunds are generally off the table once Premium is active, and a failed image still spends Neurons. If a renewal isn't paid within 7 days, the account moves back to Basic. You cancel under My Subscriptions.

Skip it if you want lots of free chat. If a friendship might turn into something more, my AI girlfriend picks are the next step.

As a friend, it's steady rather than brilliant. Memory is described as average: it keeps up inside one chat and across a few days, and in one week-long test it got a planted fact right, though it held on to fewer of the little details than the top apps do. Voice calls are its strength: one review calls them top-tier, and another says the calls keep a real-time transcript for continuity.

The free plan gives 20 messages a day, all companions and basic memory. That's a small daily chat, fine for a check-in. New signups get 200 Moments once, about 4 images, and after that the free plan adds no Moments and can't buy more. So images beyond a first taste mean paying.

Premium is the plan I'd take. It's $19.99 monthly, and the $109.99 yearly option brings that to $9.17 a month. You get unlimited messaging, 8,000 Moments a month and image and video generation. Group chats and personas sit in Ultimate, $39.99 a month, and that tier is only worth it if you want several friends talking together.

The money rules are strict. There are no partial refunds for unused days, and Moments purchases are final, so start monthly. To cancel, use your account settings or write to support; either way, what you paid for lasts until the current period is over.

Second, the cheapest plan that removes the daily cap. Unlimited chat starts at $7.99 on Uncensy's Spark, and Nomi AI's Standard is $15.99, with yearly plans bringing the monthly cost down a good deal further.

If you only text, the cheapest honest options are the ones with daily free messages or unlimited chat on the first paid tier. Nomi AI's free 50 a day covers a lot of friendship, and Uncensy's Spark at $7.99 gives unlimited chat. Kindroid's free plan has unlimited messages on its base model, with 2 character slots.

If you want to call, costs rise. Nomi AI puts voice calls in Standard at $15.99. OurDream AI's calls spend dreamcoins, and reviews say they go fast. Kindroid sells audio as a pack, 500,000 audio credits for $14.99, on top of the 5,000 lifetime audio characters free users get.

I prefer a plan that includes calls to one that meters them, because nobody should have to watch a counter while talking to a friend.

Watch the per-message traps too. EVA AI Soulmate charges 2 Neurons to read a romantic message, which is a strange thing to meter. Soulkyn's only official plan, Deluxe, is priced in euros and includes voice, but it's the priciest entry plan on this page.

My take: if you want a friend who remembers your life, pay for OurDream AI and keep an eye on coins. If you want a warm voice on a small budget and don't mind repeating yourself, Candy AI. Neither has much of a free start, so if paying isn't possible right now, my free AI chat roundup is a better first stop.

• Billing names. OurDream AI bills as DREAM STUDIO LLC AL, Candy AI as EverAI, Secrets AI as S LABS INC. and Joi AI as joi.com. Nomi AI and Kindroid show their own names.
• Private sign-up. Secrets AI offers an anonymous sign-up and crypto payment option, and two independent reviews scored its privacy 8.5-9/10.
• App store rules. EVA AI Soulmate can only be cancelled where you subscribed, and its app store sales are final. Kindroid cancels through the App Store or Google Play when bought there.
• One company, two apps. Novi Limited runs both Joi AI and EVA AI Soulmate, so if you sign up for both, your details sit with the same company.
• Refund terms. Kindroid's default is no refund and no proration for unused time, and Nomi AI says all payments are nonrefundable.

My advice: treat an AI friend like a kind stranger on a train. Share feelings freely, but keep out passwords, your address and anything that identifies your workplace. Use a separate email, and read the privacy policy before you get attached.
