Chai vs Character AI: phone app or free all-rounder?
Chai or Character AI: pick by how you like to chat
Go with Chai if
4.5/10, starts at $11.25/mo
- You chat on your phone and never on a computer

- You like making your own characters and chatting one-to-one
or
Go with Character AI if
6.6/10, starts at $4.99/mo
- You want free unlimited messaging on web, iOS and Android
- You want memory pins and group chats for a low monthly price
- You are happy with a strictly SFW space
Same idea, very different deals
Chai and Character AI both let you talk to characters that you or other people have made, and both mix companion chat with roleplay. That is where my sense of "same thing" ends. Look at who runs them, where they work and what they charge, and they turn out to be two quite different bets.
Character AI, from Character Technologies, Inc., is the broad one. You'll find it on the web, iOS and Android, and its c.ai+ FAQ promises that every user can message for free with no limit, with ads and a slow mode at busy times. It also lists group chat, voice calls and images.
The one hard line is content: its policy allows no NSFW material at all, so everything stays SFW.
Chai, from Chai Research Corp., is a phone app only, on iOS and Android. Downloading it costs nothing and it sells in-app purchases, yet it publishes no fixed free daily limit, and secondary sources say the limit keeps moving. Its content policy is listed as soft, a notch looser than Character AI.
It has no group chat and no voice calls on file. Its plans are listed as App Store in-app purchases, while Character AI sells on the web as well as through the app stores.
My take, then, comes down to two questions. Do you need a looser content level, and are you fine chatting only on your phone? If both answers are yes, Chai earns a look. If either is no, Character AI gives you more for less, and I would start there without much hesitation.
The table that follows puts the two apps side by side, feature by feature. I'd read the free tier and memory rows first, since those are where the gap is widest, and the group chat row third if you like scenes with several characters at once.
If Character AI already sounds like your pick, my full Character AI review goes deeper into its plans, the memory pins and the way it renews, so you can go in with open eyes and no surprises on your card.

Which app keeps track of your conversation?
Neither app publishes a clear memory figure, but Character AI at least hands you a tool: lite and c.ai+ both include 30 memory pins, so you can fix the details that matter. Chai has nothing comparable on file. Other reviewers report that Chai loses details you have already set up after only three to five messages, and one memory test saw it invent a beach trip that never happened.
Character AI is not flawless either: reviews describe strong recall of buried facts, but also confident extras like a hotel or a cake. My verdict: Character AI, clearly, because pins give you some control.
Your own characters, and scenes with several
Custom characters are on the menu in both apps, so neither shuts you out of building a cast. The split is group chat: Character AI lists it, and Chai lists it as a no. If you enjoy scenes where two or three characters talk to each other and to you, that single row decides it. For one-to-one chats, the two are even here.
Images, voice and how far the content goes
Character AI lists voice calls and images, with video on paid plans. Chai has images as a paid extra and no voice calls. Reviewers say Chai's pictures come out accurate when the style is anime, a narrow but real strength. Character AI's voices get mixed notes: some sound surprisingly good, others flat, with occasional delays.
On content, Chai's policy is soft and Character AI allows no NSFW content, full stop. If a softer level matters to you, Chai is the only one of the two that offers it.
Privacy, billing and getting your money back
Neither app has data-handling details on file, so I will not guess at what happens to your chats. Billing differs in shape. Chai's plans are listed as App Store in-app purchases, and the refund wording is the standard Apple EULA clause rather than a Chai policy.
Character AI says it does not refund payments unless the law requires it, with App Store and Google Play purchases refunded through Apple or Google. For Chai's side of all this in more depth, read my Chai AI review.

Chai: a phone-first app with a looser line
Chai fits one reader best: a person who chats on a phone, wants a softer content level than Character AI permits, and does not care much about group scenes. For that person, it is a reasonable pick. For everyone else, I think the numbers work against it.
My first problem is the free start. Chai is free to download, but there is no published daily limit, and secondary sources describe the cap as fluctuating rather than stable. I dislike that. When free use has no fixed number, it is hard to know when the upgrade screen will appear.
My second problem is the price ladder. Premium costs $13.99 a month, or $134.99 a year, about $11.25 per month. Ultra costs $29.99 a month, or $19.99 a week. The weekly Ultra plan works out to $86.62 a month, and I would skip it without a second thought.
If you want Ultra at all, monthly is the only sensible way to buy it. And before Ultra, I'd give Premium a fair run: secondary sources describe it as unlimited messages with no ads, which is all most people need.
My third problem is memory. Reviewers say details slip within three to five messages, which is short for anything story-like. Anime-style images are the bright spot, described as accurate, so if that is your main interest, Chai has a real case. Just remember images are a paid extra here, not part of the free download.
Refunds sit under the standard Apple EULA clause, not an app-specific promise. It is not a generous safety net, so live with the free download for a while before paying for anything.

Character AI: the most you get for nothing
Character AI is the easy recommendation for most readers of this page, and the free plan is why. Chatting without a cap on PipSqueak 2 and PipSqueak 2 Rawr costs nothing, on web, iOS and Android alike. You pay for it with full ads, slow mode at busy times and limited daily features.
That seems a fair deal to me, and it is far clearer than Chai's moving limit. On top of that, custom characters and group chats are both listed, and group chat is something Chai does not offer at any price.
The paid plans are cheap by the standards of this category. (c.ai) lite costs $4.99 a month and gives you fewer ads, 30 memory pins and chat customization. For $9.99, c.ai+ drops the ads and slow mode and opens premium chat styles without a limit.
The annual c.ai+ at $94.99 is the smart buy once you know you will stay, since it saves 21% against paying monthly.
Now the catches. The content policy allows no NSFW content at all. Long chats can get messy: other reviewers report that a promise from ten messages back slipped the AI's mind, even with Auto Memories switched on.
And one reviewer describes both a credit and a debit card being declined again and again at c.ai+ checkout, with support only suggesting another card. If that happens to you, paying through the app store may be the smoother route, and it also changes where a refund request would go.
Cancelling on the web goes through Settings > Account > Manage, which leads to the Customer Portal, and the plan renews automatically until you do. Money already paid stays paid, unless a law says otherwise.

Each app's prices appear in the currency it bills in, with no conversion. Price sorting only compares apps that share a currency.
Official list prices. Chai plans are App Store in-app purchases; Character AI shows monthly and yearly c.ai+ pricing.
Put the two price lists next to each other and the story is short: Character AI is cheaper at every step, and by a real margin.
Start at zero. Character AI's free plan lets you message without a cap, with ads and slow mode as the price. Chai's free use has no published limit and a cap that secondary sources describe as moving. For a reader who wants to spend nothing, I would not even call this close.
Now the entry plans. Character AI's (c.ai) lite is $4.99 a month. Chai has no plan that low; its cheapest paid option is Premium at $13.99. That is $9.00 more each month for the first step up.
In the middle, c.ai+ at $9.99 against Chai Premium at $13.99 is a $4.00 gap. Paid yearly, c.ai+ costs $94.99 and Chai Premium costs $134.99, so Chai asks $40.00 more for the year. Per month, that is $7.92 for c.ai+ against $11.25 for Chai Premium.
For its price, c.ai+ lists no ads, no slow mode and 30 memory pins, which tells you exactly what the upgrade buys. Neither plan is expensive in absolute terms, but I see no feature on Chai's side that justifies the extra, unless you need its softer content level.
The top end is where I get protective of your wallet. Chai Ultra is $29.99 a month, or $19.99 a week. Paying weekly works out to $86.62 a month, which is $56.63 more than monthly Ultra for the same tier. Please skip the weekly option; it is the worst-value plan on this page.
If what you really want is images and video rather than cheap chat, both of these are the wrong shelf. The money math changes completely there, and my Candy AI vs OurDream AI comparison walks through it.

Try Character AI for free
If you are looking at apps like Chai and Character AI because you want more than either allows, Candy AI is the third card in the quick answer below. Think of it as another type of app entirely: a web companion app from EverAI Limited in Malta, where you design one companion and the paid plan adds voice calls, images and video. Its adult content sits on paid plans only.
I would not call its free start generous. One source says 5 messages in total, and the check logged on 2026-09-22 recorded 3-5 messages plus 3-5 images, so the figures do not fully agree. Either way, treat it as a quick look before you decide.
Where Candy AI wins is long-term price. On the 12-Month Plan it comes to €3.99 a month, €47.88 paid upfront, and a 70% sale on that plan was listed on 2026-09-23. The refund window for non-EU/UK buyers is only 24 hours, so make the call before you pay.
Other reviewers report its memory holding for roughly 10-20 messages, better than Chai's reported three to five, though still short.
If a friend asked me for the latest on Chai vs Character AI, I would keep it short: install Character AI first. It is free, unlimited, and it works wherever you are. Only reach for Chai if Character AI's content line is a dealbreaker for you.
A few rules I would pass along with that advice:
- Stay on Character AI's free plan for a while before paying; the ads and slow mode are the only real cost.
- If you upgrade, take c.ai+ annual at $94.99 rather than monthly, once you are sure you like it.
- If you try Chai, start with the free download and move to Premium only if the moving free limit gets in your way.
- Never buy Chai Ultra weekly at $19.99; the monthly plan at $29.99 is far cheaper over a month.
One more honest note. Neither app is the one I would choose if memory is your top priority, since reviewers flag slips on both. For a companion that keeps track of you, have a look at my Candy AI vs Nomi AI page, where Nomi AI's free plan of 50 messages a day is the headline and memory is the main selling point.
Whatever you pick, give it a few relaxed evenings on the free tier before you judge it.
Common questions
Character AI vs Chai: which is better for free users?
Character AI, without much doubt. On its free plan you can message PipSqueak 2 and PipSqueak 2 Rawr as much as you like, on web, iOS and Android, in exchange for ads, slow mode at busy times and limited daily features. Chai is free to download, but it publishes no fixed free daily limit, and secondary sources describe that limit as fluctuating. I prefer a free plan I can plan around.
Does Chai work on a computer?
Not according to the facts on file. Chai is listed on iOS and Android only, while Character AI runs on the web as well as both phone platforms. If you like to chat at a desk on a big screen, that alone points you to Character AI, and its free plan makes the switch cost nothing.
Which app allows more mature content?
Chai's content policy is listed as soft, while Character AI allows no NSFW content at all. So Chai is the looser of the two, though neither is built for a full 18+ level. If that is what you want, look at a different kind of app, such as Candy AI, where adult content is available on paid plans only.
Is Chai Ultra weekly worth it?
I would say no. Chai Ultra costs $19.99 a week or $29.99 a month for the same tier. Paid weekly, it works out to $86.62 a month, which is $56.63 more than the monthly plan. If you want Ultra, buy it monthly; if you are unsure, Premium at $13.99 a month is the more sensible trial.
Which app has better memory, Chai or Character AI?
Character AI, because it gives you 30 memory pins on its lite and c.ai+ plans to lock in the details that matter. Chai has no memory tool on file, and reviewers describe it forgetting established details within three to five messages. Character AI is not perfect either: reviews mention it inventing small details with confidence, and long chats getting messy.
Can I get a refund from Chai or Character AI?
Character AI keeps payments unless the law requires a refund; App Store and Google Play purchases are refunded through Apple or Google. Chai's plans are App Store in-app purchases, and the refund wording on file is the standard Apple EULA warranty clause, not a Chai-specific policy. My advice for both: use the free tier first, so a refund never becomes the question.
