Two character chat apps, one clear price gap

Chai and PolyBuzz are aimed at the same evening: pick a character, start talking, and keep it light. Both are companion and roleplay apps, both let you create your own characters, and both keep a soft content policy rather than full adult content. Neither one lists group chat.

So far, a tie, and if you only compared feature lists you could stop reading here and pick either one.

The differences start with where you can chat. Chai is on record for iOS and Android only, with every plan sold as an App Store in-app purchase. PolyBuzz runs on the web, iOS and Android, and sells yearly plans through web checkout too.

If you like to chat on a laptop, PolyBuzz is the only one of the two that lets you.

The free start is vaguer than I'd like on both sides. Chai costs nothing to install, sells extras in the app, and has no official free message limit on record; secondary sources describe the limit as fluctuating rather than stable. PolyBuzz describes chat as "free, unlimited, and private" while naming no daily cap, and its free plan covers text chat on the Standard model with ads, plus two voice plays and a single image to begin with.

For me, PolyBuzz is the more honest free offer, simply because it tells you what the free plan contains.

Then there is money. Chai Premium costs $13.99 a month, PolyBuzz Poly Standard Monthly costs $9.90. That $4.09 gap every month is the single fact I would weigh most, because on paper Chai does not give you more for it: no voice calls, images only on paid plans, and no official feature list for Premium at all.

My take: PolyBuzz is the easier recommendation for most readers, and Chai suits someone who wants a plain phone app and nothing else. The two apps side by side, right below, lay out the features. My PolyBuzz review with every plan and its catch goes deeper into the paid tiers.

Does either one remember your story?

This is the weak spot for both, and I would rather say it early. Neither app publishes a memory feature on its record. Other reviewers report Chai dropping details you set up after only three to five messages, which is short even for casual chat.

PolyBuzz is said to lose details in long scenes too, but its Premium tier lists stronger memory chat models, and Ultimate adds a model called Permanent Memory. If memory matters to you, PolyBuzz at least gives you a paid way to improve it. Chai does not publish one.

My advice either way: keep each scene brief and remind the character of the important facts every so often.

Characters and group chats

Both let you create your own characters, and PolyBuzz also works as a character hub where you browse a range of ready-made characters. Neither lists group chat, so if you want several characters in one scene, look elsewhere. For one-on-one chat, I'd call this round even, with a small edge to PolyBuzz for the browsing.

Images, voice and content settings

Chai lists no voice calls, and images only on paid plans; the one image note on file says its output is accurate for anime-style pictures specifically. PolyBuzz includes images, gated by coins after the first free one, and voice on paid plans, with Premium bringing unlimited voice listening. Other reviewers report a split on PolyBuzz voices: one found them natural and adaptive, another found them artificial and too slow.

Both apps keep a soft content policy, so neither is the pick for full adult content. That makes either one a reasonable choice for flirty chat that stays tame. On images, I'd give PolyBuzz the round, since it gives you a free first try.

Privacy, billing and who you pay

Chai is run by Chai Research Corp., and PolyBuzz by Singularity Mutual Entertainment Culture Media Limited. Neither record lists a statement descriptor, so I cannot tell you what the charge line will say. PolyBuzz publishes its cancel steps for iOS and Android, both through the store.

Chai publishes no cancel steps of its own, so the store you paid through is where to look. My Chai AI review with its plans and refund rule has the rest.

Chai: a simple phone app with a pricey top tier

Chai is run by Chai Research Corp. and lives on iOS and Android, with no web version on record. That keeps it simple, and I think some readers will like exactly that: download, pick a character, chat. You can also build your own characters.

There is no group chat and no voice calls, so think of Chai as a text app for one-on-one chat, and judge it on that basis.

The free start is where Chai frustrates me. Downloading is free and extras are sold in the app, but the free message limit isn't officially set out, and secondary sources report that the limit fluctuates. I prefer apps that tell you the number, because a moving limit makes it hard to judge whether the free plan is enough.

The paid ladder has one plan I like and one I would avoid. Premium at $13.99 a month, or $134.99 a year at $11.25 a month, is the sensible way in. Secondary sources say it brings unlimited messages and no ads, but Chai does not publish its own list, so treat that as likely rather than promised.

Ultra is the one I'd skip in its weekly form: $19.99 a week works out to $86.62 a month, while Ultra Monthly is $29.99. Paying by the week means nearly triple the cost for an identical tier.

The refund note on file is the standard Apple EULA warranty clause, not a Chai refund policy, so I would not count on getting money back. Start with the free app, and if you do subscribe, go month by month at first. The yearly Premium plan only makes sense once a few months have shown you that Chai sticks.

If you want to see Chai against other apps too, my collection of app-versus-app comparisons has more pairings.

PolyBuzz: the flexible choice with a free web start

Singularity Mutual Entertainment Culture Media Limited runs PolyBuzz, which you can use on the web, iOS and Android. At heart it is a character hub as much as a companion app, with roleplay, image generation and your own characters in one place. That breadth is the main reason I lean toward it here.

The free plan is the part I like best. Its FAQ calls chat free and unlimited without naming a daily cap, and the plan gives text chat on the Standard model with ads, two voice plays and one image as a starter. Images after that are gated by coins, so the free plan is a chat plan first. For a free start, that is still more than Chai spells out.

The paid tiers climb in a clear way. Poly Standard Monthly is $9.90, and the yearly web plan at $99 comes to $8.25 a month. Poly Premium Monthly at $19.90 adds stronger memory chat models, unlimited voice listening, no ads and priority chat. Poly Ultimate at $29.90 adds more models, including Permanent Memory.

My pick is Standard yearly on the web if you already know you like it, and Premium only if memory really matters to you.

The weekly plan is the one I'd avoid: $4.99 a week becomes $21.62 a month, more than twice the monthly Standard price. The refund rules are strict too: a finished purchase isn't refunded without due reason, and a plan keeps renewing unless you cancel by the final day of the period.

For where these facts come from, my page on how I gather app facts from official pages explains the sources.

  • Lowest price: $8.25 monthly (Poly Standard Year (web))

  • Runs on: web, ios, android

Each app's prices appear in the currency it bills in, with no conversion. Price sorting only compares apps that share a currency.

Prices from official pages and store listings. Weekly plans are shown with their monthly equivalent, which is why they look so high.

What you really pay depends less on the headline price and more on the billing period you choose, because both apps sell a weekly plan that quietly costs far more than the monthly one.

If you chat lightly, both cost you nothing to start. PolyBuzz is the clearer free deal: text chat on the Standard model with ads and no published daily ceiling. Chai is free to download, yet with no official free limit on record I can't say how many messages you'd get.

If you chat most nights and want to pay, the cheapest sensible plan on this page is PolyBuzz Standard at $9.90 a month, or $99 a year on the web at $8.25 a month. Chai Premium is $13.99 a month, or $134.99 a year at $11.25 a month. On yearly plans, that is $3.00 a month in PolyBuzz's favour, and on monthly plans $4.09.

If you want the top tier, the two are close on monthly price: Poly Ultimate at $29.90 against Chai Ultra Monthly at $29.99. Poly Premium sits in between at $19.90 a month, adding stronger memory chat models and no ads. The trap is the weekly billing.

Chai Ultra Weekly at $19.99 comes to $86.62 a month, and Poly Standard Weekly at $4.99 comes to $21.62. My advice is blunt: never pick a weekly plan on either app unless you truly want only one week. A single month on the monthly plan is the cheaper way to try a paid tier, on both apps.

If what you really want is pictures and a character with more memory, neither app is built for that, and my Candy AI vs OurDream AI comparison for image-first apps is the better next read.

The catch on each side is worth one calm look before you commit.

With Chai, the catch is uncertainty. The free limit is not officially published and is said to fluctuate, Premium has no official feature list, and no cancel steps or statement name are on record. None of that makes Chai a bad app, but it means you are buying on trust. If you go ahead, pay monthly and note the renewal date yourself.

With PolyBuzz, the catch is memory and a strict refund rule. Long scenes can drift, and a completed purchase is not refunded without due reason. The weekly plan also looks cheap at $4.99 and is not. On the plus side, PolyBuzz spells out how to leave: on iOS through the Apple ID subscriptions screen, on Android through Google Play.

My ranking between those two catches is simple. Uncertainty bothers me more than a known limit, because you can plan around a limit you know about. That is one more reason I would start with PolyBuzz.

If a friend asked me whether to install PolyBuzz or Chai tonight, I would say PolyBuzz, and then I'd explain why in a few lines, because the reasons matter more than the name:

  • It works in a browser, so you are not tied to one phone.
  • The free plan says what it includes: chat with ads, two voice plays and one image.
  • Its monthly Standard plan costs $4.09 less than Chai Premium.
  • It offers a paid path to better memory, which Chai does not publish.
  • Its yearly Standard plan on the web comes to $8.25 per month.

I would still tell that friend that Chai is not a mistake. If all you want is a quick character chat on your phone and you never touch a laptop, it does the basic job. Just keep away from its weekly Ultra plan, which costs $86.62 a month once you do the math.

If you want Ultra at all, the monthly plan at $29.99 is the only version I would consider.

And I would add one warning for both: memory is the weak spot, so do not expect either app to remember a long story. If you're after a companion with a good memory who can also speak to you, my Candy AI vs Nomi AI comparison for memory and voice covers two apps that put that first.

Common questions

PolyBuzz or Chai: which is better for free chat?

PolyBuzz, in my view. The FAQ promises free, unlimited chat and sets no daily cap in writing, and on the free plan you get Standard-model chat with ads, a pair of voice plays and one starter image. Chai is free to download, but no fixed free limit is officially published, and secondary sources describe it as fluctuating. A free plan that tells you what it contains is easier to trust.

Is Chai or PolyBuzz cheaper?

PolyBuzz. Poly Standard Monthly is $9.90 against $13.99 for Chai Premium, and on yearly plans PolyBuzz costs $8.25 a month against $11.25 for Chai. At the top, Poly Ultimate at $29.90 and Chai Ultra Monthly at $29.99 are almost the same. Avoid the weekly plans on both apps, which cost far more per month.

Can I use Chai on a computer?

Not on the record. Chai is listed for iOS and Android only, and its plans are sold as App Store in-app purchases. PolyBuzz runs on the web as well as iOS and Android, so it is the one to pick if you want to chat on a laptop.

Which app has better memory, Chai or PolyBuzz?

Neither is strong. Reports on file say Chai can drop established details after only three to five messages. PolyBuzz is said to drift in long scenes, but its Premium tier lists stronger memory chat models, and Ultimate adds a Permanent Memory model. If memory matters, PolyBuzz at least offers a paid way to improve it.

Do Chai and PolyBuzz allow adult content?

Both have a soft content policy, so expect flirty chat that stays tame rather than full adult content. If content level is your main reason for choosing an app, neither of these two is built for it, and a comparison of apps with a wider policy will serve you better.

Can I get a refund from Chai or PolyBuzz?

It is unlikely on either. PolyBuzz won't refund a purchase that has gone through unless there is due reason. The only refund text on file for Chai is the standard Apple EULA warranty clause, which is not a Chai refund policy. Start free and pay monthly before committing to a year.
