Two character hubs with different free deals

Emochi and PolyBuzz are close cousins. Both are character hubs that mix roleplay and companion chat with a built-in picture maker, both let you create your own characters, and both have a content level on file as soft. Neither is built around adult content, so if that is your main goal, this is not the right pair.

Where they part ways is the free plan. PolyBuzz sells its chat as free, private and without limits, and publishes no number that caps it, yet you only get two free voice plays and a single image generation at the start. Emochi hands out small daily quotas instead: 2 chat models, 5 voice messages, 5 smart replies and 2 images a day, with ads.

Unlimited messages are a paid perk on Emochi, so the free chat has a limit, even if the exact number is not on file.

My take: for pure chatting, the PolyBuzz free plan is the better deal. For someone who wants a little of everything each day, Emochi's quotas are friendlier, because 2 images a day beats one image in total.

On paid plans, I find Emochi simpler. Plus at $9.99 a month has an obvious list: no ads, premium models, enhanced memory and bigger voice and image quotas. PolyBuzz has more tiers and more billing periods, including a weekly plan that I would avoid, and its full plan breakdown is in my PolyBuzz review.

Neither app publishes a statement name, so there is nothing I can tell you about how the charge reads. Both are strict about refunds, too. PolyBuzz says completed purchases are not refunded without due reason, and Emochi leaves app refunds to the App Store. That makes the free plan your real trial on both.

For my own angle, comfort and control, both do the basics: you build the character you want instead of taking a preset. Emochi's custom model instructions add a bit more control on paid plans. The table that follows lines both apps up row by row, so look there first for the one feature you care about.

Will the character remember your story?

Memory is the weak spot on both, and I would not choose either for long, slow stories without paying. Other reviewers report that Emochi characters held on to details for roughly 10-12 rounds, which is 20-24 messages. Plus raises that with enhanced memory of 600 characters.

PolyBuzz has no memory rating on file, and one report describes a long scene drifting from a train station into a hotel with no transition. Reviewers also say memory grows as you move up a tier: "2X long memory" on Basic and Premium, and Ultimate giving unlimited plus a Permanent Memory model. If memory is your top priority, PolyBuzz Ultimate is the only plan here that aims squarely at it.

Characters, models and group chats

On both apps you can design characters of your own. Reviewers found Emochi's character creation tools minimal compared with other platforms, which bothers me, since shaping a character is the part I enjoy most. Its custom model instructions on Plus make up for some of that.

PolyBuzz leans on model choice instead, with Passion, Tale and Standard models on Premium and more on Ultimate. Group chat is listed as not available on PolyBuzz and is not on file for Emochi.

Voice, images and the content level

Neither offers voice calls on the free plans. Emochi lists no voice calls at all, only daily voice messages, and its voice is described as monotonous. PolyBuzz has paid voice calls, and the reports split: one reviewer rated the voices natural at 4.2/5, another found them artificial and slow.

For images, Emochi gives 2 a day free and multiplies that on paid plans, while PolyBuzz gates images behind coins after one free generation. Video is not on file for either. The content level for both is soft. For the full rundown on its quotas, see my Emochi AI chat review.

Who runs them and where your data goes

Emochi's paperwork names several entities: the terms say Emochi, Co. in Oakland, California, the privacy policy names FlowGPT, and the Google Play developer is Flowgpt Co. PolyBuzz is run by Singularity Mutual Entertainment Culture Media Limited. PolyBuzz calls its chat private, but no privacy detail beyond that is on file for either app, so I would keep personal details out of chats on both.

Emochi: tidy quotas and a fair Plus plan

Emochi comes from the FlowGPT team and runs on the web and Android. Think of it as a character hub where roleplay, companion chat and image generation live together, and its free plan is refreshingly clear: fixed daily numbers for chat models, voice messages, smart replies and images. I like knowing exactly what I get each day.

The downside is that free chat is not unlimited, since unlimited messages sit on the paid side, and the free plan shows ads. That makes Plus the natural step. At $9.99 a month it removes ads, opens 4 premium models on top of the standard one, adds enhanced memory and multiplies the voice and image quotas by 5.

Custom model instructions are the perk I would use most, because they let you steer how your character writes.

Ultra at $16.99 a month is for heavier users. It adds 2,000 Mochi a month, which the app says is worth $20, 30% off Mochi top-ups, two flagship models and 15x voice and image quotas. Unless you spend Mochi regularly, I would stay on Plus.

My main reservations are memory and voice. Characters are reported to hold details for only about 20-24 messages, the voice is described as monotonous, and the character creation tools are called minimal. None of that is a deal-breaker for casual chat, though an epic slow-burn story needs a different home.

Refunds for the mobile app are handled solely by the app store, and no web refund policy is on file. The web app does have a cancel option for subscriptions, and its checkout promises cancel anytime on monthly plans, which I like. If you are still shopping around, my collection of app comparisons has more pairs worth a look.

PolyBuzz: open free chat, busy price list

Singularity Mutual Entertainment Culture Media Limited runs PolyBuzz, the only one of the two with an iOS app, alongside Android and the web. Like Emochi, it is a character hub with roleplay, companion chat and image generation. Its strongest selling point is the free chat: the FAQ and the Google Play listing agree there is no published daily message ceiling. For someone who mostly wants to talk, that is a big deal.

The free plan is thin on everything else. You get the Standard model with ads, a pair of free voice plays and one image at the start, and then images cost coins. For text with no cap, that seems a fair deal to me.

The paid side is where I get picky. There are three tiers, Standard, Premium and Ultimate, each with monthly and yearly billing, plus a weekly Standard plan. That weekly plan costs $4.99 a week, which works out to $21.62 a month, more than twice the $9.90 monthly price. Please skip it.

Premium at $19.90 a month is the tier that adds stronger memory chat models, unlimited voice listening, no ads and priority chat. Ultimate at $29.90 adds more models: Permanent Memory, Overture, Lumina, Conqueror and Saga. Given that memory is the weak spot reviewers mention most, I would pick Premium over Standard if you pay at all.

The refund language is firm: once a purchase is complete, PolyBuzz refunds nothing unless there is due reason. On iOS and Android you cancel in the store's subscription settings, and to stop the renewal it has to happen by the final day of the current period. For how I weigh official terms against outside reports, read how I check the apps.

Each app's prices appear in the currency it bills in, with no conversion. Price sorting only compares apps that share a currency.

Both apps charge in US dollars and renew automatically; the monthly equivalent shows what each plan costs spread over a month.

Price-wise, these two sit very close at the entry level. Emochi Plus is $9.99 a month and PolyBuzz Standard is $9.90. Paid yearly, Emochi Plus comes to $8.33 a month and PolyBuzz Standard to $8.25. The difference is a few cents, so I would decide on features, not price.

For a light user, both free plans are the answer. PolyBuzz covers endless text, Emochi covers a bit of everything each day. I would not pay for either until the free plan starts to feel small.

For a regular user who wants no ads and better models, Emochi Plus is the one I would buy first. Its perks are spelled out, and custom model instructions plus 5x voice and image quotas make it good value. The quarterly Plus plan at $26.99 saves very little over monthly, so I would go monthly or yearly.

For a heavy user who cares about memory, PolyBuzz Premium at $19.90 or Ultimate at $29.90 is where the stronger memory models live. That costs more than Emochi Ultra at $16.99, but Ultra spends its extra money on Mochi and flagship models rather than memory. Yearly, Emochi Ultra falls to $14.17 a month and PolyBuzz Premium to $16.58.

Two traps to avoid. The PolyBuzz weekly plan at $4.99 is the most expensive way to buy Standard by far. And yearly plans on either app are a gamble, since neither refunds an unused period easily. Start monthly, then switch once you are sure.

If your budget is really for video or adult image generation, which neither record offers, compare paid companion apps instead; my Candy AI vs OurDream AI page is a good place to start.

PolyBuzz Free text chat with no published message cap · 6.1/10, starts at $8.25/mo Try PolyBuzz for free

If you only want to talk to characters and do not care much about pictures or voice, PolyBuzz is where I would send you first. Its chat is marketed as free, unlimited and private, and no numeric cap is published anywhere on file. You deal with ads and the Standard model, and that is about it.

Keep expectations in line with the record, though: PolyBuzz lists no group chat and no video, so think one-on-one text rather than a big production.

It is also the more flexible choice for phones, with apps for iOS and Android as well as the web. If you switch devices a lot, that matters.

My one warning is about what comes after the free plan. The price list is long, and the weekly plan looks cheap at $4.99 while costing the most over a month. If you upgrade, compare the monthly equivalent first, and pick Premium if memory is the reason you are paying.

Refunds are firm, so give the free chat a proper chance before you spend anything. For a text-first user, it may be all you ever need.

Here is the advice I would give a friend deciding between the two.

  • Just want to chat for free, as much as you like? PolyBuzz.
  • Want a daily mix of voice messages, smart replies and images for free? Emochi.
  • On an iPhone? PolyBuzz, since the Emochi record lists web and Android only.
  • Ready to pay around $10 a month? Emochi Plus, for its clear perks and custom model instructions.
  • Want the best memory money can buy here? PolyBuzz Ultimate, with its Permanent Memory model.

My overall pick is Emochi by a small margin, because its free plan and its Plus plan are both easy to understand, and I value that honesty. PolyBuzz is the better choice for anyone who mostly types and never wants to hit a wall.

Neither app is built for adult roleplay, since both have a soft content level. If that is what you are after, or you would like a companion who reads as a partner rather than a hub of characters, the options are different. My Candy AI vs Nomi AI comparison covers two companion apps with a romance focus.

Whichever way you go, start on the free plan and use it as a preview of the paid version. Cancel where you paid: Emochi's web app has a cancel option, and PolyBuzz on a phone cancels through the Apple or Google subscription settings.

Common questions

Is PolyBuzz really free and unlimited?

For text chat, yes as far as the official pages show. The FAQ markets chat as free, unlimited and private, and there is no published daily message cap. The free plan uses the Standard model with ads, includes two voice plays and one free image when you join, and images need coins from then on.

What does the Emochi free plan include?

Emochi Free gives 2 chat models, 5 voice messages and 5 smart replies a day, 2 images a day and 1 Exclusive Moment, with ads. Unlimited messages are a paid perk, so free chat is limited, although the exact number is not published.

Which is cheaper, Emochi or PolyBuzz?

They are almost the same at entry level. Emochi Plus costs $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year, and PolyBuzz Standard costs $9.90 a month or $99 a year on web checkout. Avoid the PolyBuzz weekly plan at $4.99, which works out to $21.62 a month.

Do Emochi and PolyBuzz allow adult content?

Both have a soft content level on file, so neither is built for adult roleplay. If adult content is what you want, a paid companion app such as Candy AI allows it on its paid plans.

Does Emochi or PolyBuzz remember more?

Neither is strong on the free plan. Emochi characters are reported to keep details for about 20-24 messages, and Plus adds enhanced memory of 600 characters. PolyBuzz memory is reported to scale by tier, with Ultimate adding a Permanent Memory model.

Will Emochi or PolyBuzz refund a subscription?

Refunds are hard on both. PolyBuzz's terms say that, without due reason, a finished purchase gives users no right to a refund. Emochi's terms say app refunds are handled solely by the app store, and no web refund policy is on file.
