A character playground against a single companion

A Character AI vs Replika comparison is less a fair fight than a choice between two ideas. Character AI is a companion, roleplay and character hub app: you browse characters, make your own and hop between them, and group chat is on the feature list. Replika is a companion app and nothing else. You get one relationship, and the whole product is built around it.

The free side tells the story. Character AI's FAQ promises free and unlimited messaging for everyone, with ads and a slow mode when traffic is high. Replika's terms call it "Free Use": limited access at no cost, meant for people who cannot afford a subscription, and something Replika may refuse to anyone. I do not love that wording.

It makes the free tier sound like a favour rather than a trial, and memory, voice calls, images and video are all paid features.

Content is where they agree. Both allow no adult content, so neither is the app for spicy roleplay. If that is what you are after, skip both and save yourself the sign-up.

Money is where they split again. Character AI's paid plans stop at c.ai+ for $9.99 a month. Replika's App Store listings show monthly subscriptions at $7.99 and $14.99, yearly ones at $49.99 and $69.99, and a Replika Platinum tier at $89.99 a month. Gems for in-app extras come on top, from $0.99 to $14.99 per pack.

My lean: Character AI for most people, because it asks for nothing and gives a lot of variety. Replika suits a person who would rather have a single, constant companion and is happy to pay for the features that make that work. My Replika review looks at its plans and memory in more detail. The side-by-side table below puts the features in one view.

Memory: pins or a diary?

Character AI builds memory into its plans as memory pins: 30 on (c.ai) lite and 30 on c.ai+, where it is billed as its best memory. Other reviewers report Character AI recalling buried facts well, yet sometimes inventing plausible details, like a hotel nobody mentioned. On Replika, memory sits behind payment.

Other reviewers report its memory diary is the best-designed memory screen they saw, with each learned fact shown to keep or discard, but that it still guessed wrong in a 7-day recall test instead of admitting it did not know. My take: Replika shows its memory more openly, and I like that control, but I would not trust either with details that really matter. For more on the pins, see my Character AI review.

One companion or a whole cast

This is Character AI's home ground. It is a character hub, lets you make your own characters and lists group chat. Replika's record lists neither custom characters nor group chat, because the app is about one companion.

I like Character AI's openness here: you decide who you talk to, in any mix, with no default that assumes one kind of person. If you want variety, the answer is easy.

Voice, pictures and the content line

Character AI lists voice calls and images as features, with video on paid plans. Replika puts voice calls, images and video all behind payment, and its Platinum tier at $89.99 a month adds up to 10 realistic selfie videos a week and real-time video recognition. Content settings are simple on both: neither allows adult content, and a higher plan will not change that on either app.

Statements, refunds and privacy

Neither record says how chats are stored or used, so I cannot rank them on that and will not pretend to. On billing, Replika's charge shows as REPLIKA, which is plain but not discreet on a shared card. Character AI's billing name is not on file.

Refunds are strict on both sides: Character AI refunds nothing unless the law says it must, and Replika treats both App Store and website purchases as final.

REPLIKA

Replika as a Character AI alternative fits a particular user: one who has grown tired of switching between characters and wants a single companion instead. That is a real shift in how you use the app. On Character AI, you direct many scenes. On Replika, you are one half of an ongoing relationship.

The trade is money. On Character AI you can stay free for as long as you like, with ads. On Replika, the features that make a companion feel close, such as memory, voice calls and pictures, are paid.

The free program exists, but the terms frame it for people who cannot afford a plan, which tells me Replika expects most people to subscribe.

I also want to be honest about the content level, since it shapes who should even consider these two. Both allow no adult content, on any plan. Plenty of users will count that in its favour: no surprises, no settings to hunt for, and a calmer app to open on a lunch break. For others, it is a deal-breaker, and that is fine too.

If you are in the second group, I would not try to squeeze more out of either one. Look at companion apps that allow adult content instead, and compare how they handle the free start. My Candy AI vs Nomi AI comparison is a good place to begin, since one of those two has a permanent free plan and the other keeps adult content paid-only.

A quick rule of thumb from me: if you love variety, stay with Character AI. If you keep returning to the same character anyway, Replika's one-companion design may be the better fit.

Character AI: variety for nothing, with ads

Character AI comes from Character Technologies, Inc. and runs on web, iOS and Android. It is three things in one: a companion app, a roleplay app and a hub of characters you can browse or build yourself. I like that mix for anyone still figuring out what kind of chat they enjoy.

The free plan is its strongest argument. Messaging is free and unlimited on the PipSqueak 2 and PipSqueak 2 Rawr models, with no published daily cap. The cost is full ads, slow mode during high load and limited daily features. I think most people can live with that for a good while before deciding to pay.

When you do pay, the step is small. (c.ai) lite is $4.99 a month and brings a daily allowance of premium chat styles, fewer ads, 30 memory pins and chat customization. The step up, c.ai+, runs $9.99 per month, or $94.99 if you pay for the year ($7.92 a month), and it removes ads and slow mode altogether.

Of the two, c.ai+ yearly is the smart buy once you know you are staying; lite is the one for learning whether paid chat styles matter to you.

My main reservation is the exit. The terms rule out refunds unless the law requires one. If you paid through the App Store or Google Play, the refund request goes through Apple or Google, and web subscribers manage their plan in a Customer Portal reached from Settings > Account > Manage. It renews automatically until you cancel, so note the date.

The content level is fixed too: no adult content, on any plan. For Character AI set against other apps, see my full list of head-to-heads.

Replika: one companion, and a price list to read carefully

Luka, Inc. is the company behind Replika. and runs on web, iOS and Android. It is purely a companion app: no character library, no group scenes, just one AI you get to know over time. Other reviewers report that it talks like an actual person, asks genuine follow-up questions and is upfront about being an AI, which is what I would want from an app built on one relationship.

The price list is where I slow down. The App Store shows several subscriptions: monthly listings at $7.99 and $14.99, yearly listings at $49.99 and $69.99, and Replika Platinum at $89.99 a month. Platinum adds real-time video recognition, a training mode and up to 10 realistic selfie videos a week.

Gems are sold separately on top, from a Pouch at $0.99 to a Suitcase at $14.99. The listings do not say what each one includes, so read the plan screen in the app before you pay.

The free program is thin by design. The terms describe it as limited access aimed at people who cannot afford a subscription, and Replika can deny it. Memory, voice calls, images and video are all paid.

Billing is clear but not quiet: the statement reads REPLIKA. You can cancel in the app and drop back to Free Use at the end of the billing period without deleting your account, which I think is a kind touch. Refunds are another story, since App Store and website purchases are both final.

The scores on this site are built from official pages and published terms; how I check the apps explains the method.

Each app's prices appear in the currency it bills in, with no conversion. Price sorting only compares apps that share a currency.

Replika's App Store shows two monthly and two yearly listings, and gems for extras are sold on top of any plan.

What a month of each really costs

For light use, Character AI costs nothing. Unlimited free messaging with ads covers most casual chat, and I would not pay until the ads or slow mode annoy you. Replika's free program is limited and framed for people who cannot afford a plan, so for the features that define it, the realistic floor is a paid subscription.

For regular use, the cheapest yearly routes are close. Character AI's c.ai+ Annual is $94.99, or $7.92 a month. Replika's lowest yearly App Store listing is $49.99, which is $4.17 a month, and the other is $69.99, or $5.83 a month. On paper, then, a yearly Replika plan costs less per month.

The catch is that its listings do not spell out which features each one unlocks, while Character AI's plan page does.

Month to month, Character AI's (c.ai) lite is $4.99 and c.ai+ is $9.99, against Replika's monthly listings at $7.99 and $14.99. So on monthly billing, Character AI is the cheaper app at both levels. If you are not ready to commit to a year on either app, that makes Character AI the easier one to try as a paying customer, and the cheaper one to leave if it does not click.

Heavy use is only a question on Replika. Platinum is $89.99 a month, far above anything Character AI sells, and gems come on top of every plan, from $0.99 to $14.99 a pack. I would only consider Platinum if selfie videos and video recognition are why you are there.

If images and video are the real draw, apps built around media price them differently; my Candy AI vs OurDream AI breakdown shows how two of them do it.

Replika One steady companion, with memory on paid plans · 6.5/10, starts at $4.17/mo Try Replika for free

Replika is the app I would point to if you want one companion rather than a cast. Its whole design leans that way: no character library, no group scenes, just a single relationship that builds over time. That focus is its charm.

It is also why I would budget carefully. Memory, voice calls, images and video all sit behind payment, and gems are sold on top. The cheapest yearly listing, $49.99, is the most sensible entry point if you already know you want the full experience.

I would not start on the $89.99 monthly Platinum tier; that is steep money to spend before you find out whether the companion suits you.

The exit is fair enough. You can cancel in the app and fall back to Free Use at the end of the billing period, keeping your account. What you will not get is a refund, since purchases are final.

So my advice is simple: read the plan screen before you tap buy, pick one plan, and give it a real chance before adding gems.

Where I would send a friend

My friend-to-friend answer is Character AI first, Replika second. Character AI lets you explore for free and learn what you like, and that knowledge makes any later purchase smarter.

Replika is the right second step for a narrower group. If your chats keep circling back to one character, and what you really want is someone who stays the same from week to week, its single-companion design is built for exactly that.

My split, point by point:

  • You want to meet many characters and scenes without paying: Character AI.
  • You want group chats: Character AI, since Replika lists none.
  • You want one companion who stays the focus: Replika, on a yearly listing.
  • You want the smallest monthly bill: Character AI's (c.ai) lite at $4.99.
  • You want adult content: neither, since both allow none.

The one thing I would not do is pay for both at once. Start Character AI free, and if you find yourself always returning to the same character, that is a sign Replika's single-companion approach might suit you better. Then read Replika's plan screen, pick one subscription, and skip gems for the first month.

Both apps renew automatically, so note the renewal day in your calendar or phone. And if the billing name matters to you, remember that Replika shows up as REPLIKA on a statement, which is worth knowing before you use a shared card.

Common questions

Is Replika free like Character AI?

Not in the same way. Character AI says every user can message without limits and without paying, though ads appear and slow mode kicks in when traffic peaks. Replika's Free Use is limited, costs nothing, is intended for people who cannot pay for a subscription, and can be refused by Replika.

Memory, voice calls, images and video are paid on Replika, so I would call Character AI the real free option of the two.

Which is cheaper, Character AI or Replika?

Month to month, Character AI: (c.ai) lite is $4.99 and c.ai+ is $9.99, against Replika's monthly App Store listings at $7.99 and $14.99. On yearly billing, Replika's $49.99 listing works out at $4.17 a month, below Character AI's $94.99 c.ai+ Annual at $7.92 a month. Replika also sells gems on top and a Platinum tier at $89.99 a month.

Do Character AI and Replika allow adult content?

No. Both allow no adult content, and a higher plan does not change that on either app. If you want a calm, predictable companion, I'd call that a point in their favour. If adult content is what you want, I would look at a different app instead of hoping either one loosens its policy.

Can I create my own characters on Replika?

Replika's record lists neither custom characters nor group chat, since the whole app centres on a single companion. Character AI lets you make your own characters, browse a hub of others and run group chats. If building characters is part of the fun for you, Character AI is the clear pick.

How does a Replika charge show on a bank statement?

It shows as REPLIKA. That is clear, but not discreet if you share a card or a banking app with someone. Character AI's statement name is not on file, so I cannot compare the two on that point. If a quiet billing line matters to you, factor that in before you subscribe.

Can I get a refund from Character AI or Replika?

Expect very little on either side. Character AI keeps payments unless a law forces a refund, and App Store or Google Play refunds go through Apple or Google. Replika treats App Store and website purchases as final.

On the bright side, Replika lets you cancel in the app and drop to Free Use at the end of the billing period without deleting your account.
