Which goes further: free Character AI vs PolyBuzz?
Which one fits you better?
Go with Character AI if
6.6/10, starts at $4.99/mo
- You want free, unlimited text roleplay and can live with ads
- You like group chats with several characters at once
- You want the cheapest paid step: $4.99 a month for (c.ai) lite
or
Go with PolyBuzz if
6.1/10, starts at $8.25/mo
- You want a free taste of voice and images next to the chat
- You would pay for stronger memory models on a higher tier
- You are happy with one character per scene, since there is no group chat
Two free chat apps with very different paywalls
On paper, Character AI vs PolyBuzz looks like a tie: both promise free, unlimited chat, both run on web, iOS and Android, and both let you build your own characters. The difference shows up once you look at what each free plan leaves out, and at what the first paid step costs.
Character AI's free plan gives unlimited messaging on its PipSqueak 2 and PipSqueak 2 Rawr models, with full ads, slow mode at busy times and limited daily features. I think that is a genuinely good deal for pure text roleplay. It also has group chat, which PolyBuzz does not list at all.
PolyBuzz sells its chat as free, private and unlimited, and it publishes no daily cap. The free plan runs on the Standard model with ads, and throws in one image generation and two voice plays for free at the start. That small taste of voice and pictures is the hook. After it, images are gated by coins and voice sits on the paid plans.
Content is the other split, and I want to be plain about it. Character AI allows no adult content at all. PolyBuzz lists a soft content policy, which I read as flirty at most rather than fully open. If adult content is the reason you are here, neither app is the right pick, and I would look elsewhere.
Price-wise, the entry plans are close. Character AI charges $4.99 a month for (c.ai) lite and $9.99 for c.ai+, while Poly Standard Monthly is $9.90. The gap opens higher up, where PolyBuzz stacks Premium and Ultimate tiers on top and Character AI simply stops.
My view: if you mainly want to talk to characters, start with Character AI. If you want a free sample of voice and images inside the same app, PolyBuzz gets you there, and my PolyBuzz review covers its coin setup in more depth. Next comes a table that puts the features next to each other, so you can see both apps at a glance.

Character AI chat vs PolyBuzz: which one remembers?
Neither record gives a plain memory rating, so I lean on the plans and on reviews. Character AI's c.ai+ lists its best memory with 30 memory pins, and (c.ai) lite includes 30 pins too. Other reviewers report strong recall of buried facts, but also invented extra details stated with equal confidence, and long chats that got messy.
PolyBuzz ties memory to tiers: Premium lists stronger memory chat models and Ultimate adds a Permanent Memory model. Other reviewers report its memory drifting in long scenes, with a train station turning into a hotel without any transition. My take: both slip in long chats, pins are the more concrete tool, and so memory goes to Character AI. My Character AI review goes further into its memory pins.
Your own characters, and who allows group scenes
Both let you create your own characters, and both are character hubs, which I love for exploring without committing to one companion. A hub also means nobody assumes who you are or who you want to talk to. Group chat is the clear split: Character AI lists it, PolyBuzz does not. If you like scenes with more than one character, that decides it for you.
Voice plays, images and content limits
PolyBuzz is the more media-minded app, listed as an image generator as well as a chat app. Its free plan starts you with one image generation and two voice plays, and Premium adds unlimited voice listening. Character AI lists images and voice calls as features, with video on paid plans only.
On content, Character AI allows no adult content and PolyBuzz lists a soft policy. On voice, other reviewers report mixed results for both apps, so I would not choose either one for voice alone.
Privacy claims and refund rules
PolyBuzz markets its chat as private, which I like to see written down, but neither record says how chats are stored or used. The billing name on a card statement is not on file for either app, so I cannot tell you how discreet it is. Refunds are strict on both sides: Character AI's terms rule out refunds unless the law requires one, and PolyBuzz says a completed purchase is not refunded without due reason.

Character AI: the free plan that barely asks for anything
Behind Character AI stands Character Technologies, Inc. It is a companion, roleplay and character hub app on web, iOS and Android, and its big promise sits in its own FAQ: free and unlimited messaging for all users. No numeric daily cap is published, which I find refreshing.
The trade-offs on the free side are ads, slow mode that reduces response speed when the service is busy, and limited daily features. For casual roleplay, that trade seems fair to me. Trying it costs nothing, so you can see whether it suits you, and you can make your own characters from the start.
For a reader who wants a companion built exactly their way, without a default that assumes one kind of person, that openness counts for a lot.
The paid ladder is short and cheap. First comes (c.ai) lite, $4.99 a month: fewer ads, 30 memory pins, chat customization and some premium chat-style messages each day. Next is c.ai+, $9.99 a month, which removes both ads and slow mode and gives you premium support plus the top daily limits.
The annual c.ai+ plan is $94.99, which works out at $7.92 a month, and the pricing page shows it as a 21% saving on $119.88. If you already know you will stay, that annual plan is the one I would buy.
The catch is the content policy: Character AI allows no adult content, and no plan changes that. Refunds are tight as well. The terms call payments non-refundable unless the law says otherwise, and phone purchases go back through Apple or Google. On the web, you cancel under Settings > Account > Manage, which opens a Customer Portal.
If you want to see it next to other apps, my comparison hub has more head-to-heads.

PolyBuzz: free chat with a taste of voice and images
The company behind PolyBuzz is Singularity Mutual Entertainment Culture Media Limited. It calls itself a character hub, a roleplay app, a companion app and an image generator all at once, and it runs on web, iOS and Android. PolyBuzz as a Character AI alternative makes the most sense for people who want some media in the same place as the chat.
The free plan is generous on text. The chat is pitched as unlimited, private and free, no daily limit is published, and it runs on the Standard model with ads. New accounts also get a single free image generation and a pair of free voice plays.
After that, images need coins, so I would not expect the free side to carry you far into pictures.
The paid side is where it gets busy. Poly Standard Monthly is $9.90, or $99 a year on the web. Premium is $19.90 a month or $199 a year, with no ads, priority chat, unlimited voice listening and the stronger memory chat models. It also opens the Passion and Tale models alongside Standard.
Ultimate is $29.90 a month or $299 a year and adds extra models, including Permanent Memory. There is also a weekly Standard plan at $4.99, which works out at $21.62 a month. I would skip that one: no other route to the cheapest tier costs as much.
Refunds are strict. The terms say a completed purchase is not refunded without due reason. On iOS you cancel in the Settings app under Apple ID > Subscriptions, and on Android through the Google Play Store app.
My scores lean on official pages and published terms, and how I check the apps lays out that method.

Each app's prices appear in the currency it bills in, with no conversion. Price sorting only compares apps that share a currency.
PolyBuzz also sells a weekly Standard plan at $4.99, about $21.62 a month; Character AI lists no weekly plan.
The real monthly bill for each app
Light use costs nothing on either app. Both offer unlimited free chat with ads, so if text roleplay is all you want, I would not pay at all at first. Character AI adds slow mode at busy times; PolyBuzz adds one image and two voice plays as a sample.
Regular use is where the cheapest paid steps matter. Character AI's (c.ai) lite costs $4.99 monthly, and c.ai+ is $9.99. PolyBuzz's Standard Monthly is $9.90. So the two main plans are 9 cents apart, but Character AI also offers that cheaper lite tier below.
On yearly billing, c.ai+ Annual is $94.99, or $7.92 a month, while Poly Standard Year on the web is $99, or $8.25 a month. Character AI wins the regular-use bracket, narrowly. Both renew on their own: Character AI charges each period until you cancel, and PolyBuzz renews unless you cancel by the last day.
Heavy use belongs to PolyBuzz, since Character AI stops at $10 and PolyBuzz alone goes higher. Premium is $19.90 monthly or $199 yearly, which is $16.58 a month. Ultimate costs $29.90 a month or $299 a year, which is $24.92 a month.
I would only climb that high if the memory models are the reason you pay, since that is mainly what the upper tiers add.
One warning on PolyBuzz: avoid the weekly plan. At $4.99 a week it adds up to $21.62 a month, which is more than Premium monthly.
If you are also eyeing apps that put images and video at the centre, my Candy AI vs OurDream AI comparison weighs two paid media plans against each other.

Try PolyBuzz for free
What I like about PolyBuzz is that its free plan gives you a small sample of everything, not just text. Two voice plays and one image will not last an evening, but they tell you whether the media side is worth paying for. That is more honest than a feature list.
What I do not like is how quickly the paid menu grows. Standard, Premium, Ultimate, weekly, monthly, yearly: it is easy to buy more than you need. My advice is to start free, then try Standard Monthly at $9.90 for a single month if you want to keep going.
Premium at $19.90 only makes sense if unlimited voice listening or the stronger memory models are why you are there. Ultimate lists extra models beyond Permanent Memory, such as Overture, Lumina, Conqueror and Saga, so model fans get the widest menu there.
Also remember that PolyBuzz has no group chat. If you enjoy scenes with several characters at once, that gap matters more than any price difference. PolyBuzz or C.AI, then? For one character and a bit of media, I lean PolyBuzz. For group roleplay, C.AI.
My advice if you are torn between them
If a friend asked me about PolyBuzz vs Character AI, I would tell them to open both free versions before paying for anything.
Then I would sort it like this:
- You want group chats with several characters: Character AI, since PolyBuzz lists none.
- You want the lowest paid price: Character AI's (c.ai) lite, $4.99 a month.
- You want to hear voices and make images in the same app: PolyBuzz, starting on Standard.
- You care about a dedicated memory model and will pay for it: PolyBuzz Ultimate, yearly only once you are sure.
- You want adult content: neither, since Character AI allows none and PolyBuzz lists only a soft policy.
My overall pick is Character AI for most people, simply because its free plan and its lite tier cover so much for so little. PolyBuzz is the better second app to keep around for voice and pictures.
One habit I would recommend with either: read the cancel steps before you subscribe. Character AI cancels through a Customer Portal on the web, while PolyBuzz on a phone cancels through Apple or Google. Neither offers refunds easily, so knowing the exit first saves you a renewal you did not want.
If adult content is where you are headed, my Candy AI vs Nomi AI comparison covers two apps that allow it.
Common questions
Is Character AI really free?
Yes. Its FAQ promises free and unlimited messaging for all users, and no numeric daily cap is published. The free plan runs on the PipSqueak 2 and PipSqueak 2 Rawr models with full ads, slow mode at busy times and limited daily features.
I think it is one of the most complete free plans for text roleplay, as long as ads do not bother you.
Is PolyBuzz free to use?
The chat is. PolyBuzz calls its chat free, private and unlimited without any published daily limit, on the Standard model with ads. On top of that, the free plan hands out two voice plays and a single image generation at no cost.
Beyond that, images need coins and more voice needs a paid plan, so I would call it free for text and a sample for everything else.
C.AI vs PolyBuzz: which is cheaper?
Character AI, narrowly. It charges $4.99 a month for the (c.ai) lite plan, while c.ai+ costs $9.99 a month or $94.99 a year. PolyBuzz's Standard plan costs $9.90 a month or $99 a year on the web.
PolyBuzz also has Premium and Ultimate tiers up to $29.90 a month, and a weekly plan that works out at $21.62 a month, which I would avoid.
Does Character AI or PolyBuzz allow adult content?
Character AI allows no adult content on any plan. PolyBuzz lists a soft content policy, which I read as flirty at most. If adult content is what you want, I would pick a different app instead of hoping either of these loosens up, since paying for a higher tier does not change the policy on Character AI.
Can I run group chats on Character AI or PolyBuzz?
Character AI lists group chat; PolyBuzz does not. If you enjoy scenes with several characters talking at once, that alone makes Character AI the better choice. If you prefer one character at a time, the missing group chat on PolyBuzz will not matter much, and its voice and image extras may matter more.
Can I get a refund from Character AI or PolyBuzz?
It is hard on both. Character AI only refunds a payment where the law demands it, and App Store or Google Play purchases are refunded through Apple or Google. PolyBuzz says a completed purchase is not refunded without due reason.
My advice is to stay on the free plans until you are sure, then start with a monthly plan rather than a yearly one.
