Janitor AI vs Character AI: Which Suits You?
Two free character apps, two different promises
Go with Character AI if
6.6/10, starts at $4.99/mo
- You want voice, images and group chats alongside text
- You prefer an app that keeps every chat free of adult content
- You want a paid plan from $4.99 a month
or
Go with Janitor AI if
6.6/10, starts at $12.99/mo
- You want adult roleplay allowed without paying
- You care mostly about text chat with a huge library of public characters
- You would rather skip voice and images and keep it simple
Both free, but built for different nights
On the surface these two look like twins. Both are character apps on the web, iOS and Android, both let you make your own characters, and both promise free chat without a published daily cap. Few apps in this category do that, and I like both of them for it. The difference is what each one lets the story become.
Character AI has no adult content on any plan. It fills that gap with extras: voice, images, group chats and a cheap lite plan. Janitor AI goes the other way. Adult content is allowed, the free tier covers millions of public bots on its built-in JLLM model, and there is no voice, no images and no group chat at all.
It is text, and a lot of it. Character AI also counts as a companion app; Janitor AI is purely a character hub for roleplay.
My take: if your roleplay needs to go past a fade to black, only Janitor AI of this pair allows it, so the choice makes itself. If you want a friendly, all-round app for chat, voice and group scenes, Character AI does more for less money. I would not call either one better overall. They are simply aimed at different evenings.
Memory is the weak spot on both sides, and I want to flag it early. Janitor AI's free memory is said to fade within 20-30 messages. Character AI gets praise for recall, but also for inventing details that were never mentioned. Neither is a memory specialist, so keep your expectations modest.
If Janitor AI is the one you are leaning towards, my Janitor AI review with the free JLLM details covers it at length. For a quick scan first, the table just below, The two apps side by side, shows each feature in one row per app. Look at the voice, image and group rows.
That is where the two part ways most clearly, and it is the quickest way to see which one matches the kind of chat you want.

Will either one remember your story?
Neither record lists memory as a plain feature, so I go by the plans and the reviews. Character AI's paid plans give you 30 memory pins, and other reviewers describe strong recall of buried facts. The catch is that it sometimes invents details with the same confidence, and one reviewer saw it forget a promise from ten messages earlier.
Janitor AI's free JLLM has a context of about 9k, and Janitor+ offers 5x more context. Reviewers call its memory fine within a session and shaky across multi-day chats. I'd give Character AI a slight edge here. Those pins start on the $4.99 lite plan, so the cheapest upgrade already buys the main memory tool.
Custom characters and group scenes
Both apps let you build your own characters, which I count as a must. Janitor AI's strength is the size of its public library, with millions of bots on the free tier. Character AI adds group chat, which Janitor AI does not have. For one character at a time, call it a tie. If you want a cast in the same scene, Character AI wins.
Voice, pictures and content level
Character AI lists voice, images and paid video. Reviews of the voices are mixed: some sound surprisingly good, others flat, and delays happen. Janitor AI has none of these, so it is a text-only app. On content, the split is total.
Character AI's policy allows no adult content. Janitor AI allows it, and on the free plan too. That makes Janitor AI a natural Character AI alternative for anyone who keeps hitting a wall mid-scene. For everything else Character AI offers, see my Character AI review with the plan details.
Privacy and the payment side
The records hold no privacy policy details for either app, so I won't guess about storage or training. Neither record has a statement descriptor either, which I'd like to see added. What I can say is who runs them: Character Technologies, Inc. and JanitorAI Inc. Web payments on both go through Stripe, and app store purchases through Apple or Google.
If a discreet bank line matters to you, that gap is worth knowing before you pay, and it is a question to put to support first.

Character AI: the all-rounder that stays clean
Character Technologies, Inc. makes Character AI, available on the web, iOS and Android. Its free promise is one of the strongest I know of: free and unlimited messaging for all users, on PipSqueak 2 and PipSqueak 2 Rawr. The trade-off is ads, slow mode at busy times and limited daily features. For something that costs nothing, that trade seems fair to me.
What I like most is the range. You get custom characters, group chats, voice and images, and video on a paid basis. For someone who wants a playful, varied app for friendly chat, story games or a comfort character, that is a lot of choice with no bill.
The line it will not cross is adult content. The policy is none, on every plan, so paying does not change it. I respect the clarity, but if that is what you came for, walk away now rather than hoping a plan unlocks it.
The paid plans are cheap. For $4.99 a month, the (c.ai) lite plan brings a daily allowance of premium chat styles, fewer ads, 30 memory pins and chat customization. At $9.99, c.ai+ gets rid of both ads and slow mode, with the top daily limits. It also includes premium support, which I would value given the checkout trouble below. The annual c.ai+ plan is $94.99, which the pricing page shows against $119.88.
Two things bother me. Money paid is not returned, unless the law requires a refund. And one reviewer reports cards declined repeatedly at c.ai+ checkout for three weeks, with support suggesting only a different card. If checkout fails, an app store purchase may be the easier path.

Janitor AI: a huge text library with the doors open
Janitor AI is run by JanitorAI Inc. and is available on the web, iOS and Android. Above all it is a character hub: millions of public bots, your own characters, and roleplay at the centre. Adult content is allowed, and the free plan includes it, which is the main reason people pick it over Character AI.
The official free plan offers unlimited JLLM chats and swipes, standard models, JLLM-short and a context window of about 9k. One secondary source puts the free limit nearer 50 messages a day, so sources differ, and the official wording is what I go by. Either way, the free side is generous for text.
What you do not get is anything beyond text. There is no voice, no images, no video and no group chat on file. I actually like that honesty. It does one thing and does not pretend otherwise, and there are no coins to trip over.
Memory is the part I'd watch. Other reviewers describe it as largely session-based, with details drifting within 20-30 messages on the free model. Janitor+ at $12.99 a month is the fix on offer: 5x more context, unlimited priority messages and more swipes on frontier models, plus a golden username and checkmark. I'd only pay if long stories keep falling apart for you.
Refunds are generally not offered, except where the terms or the law require it. On the web you cancel under Settings, Billing, then Manage Subscription, which sends you to Stripe. On a phone, you cancel through the App Store or Google Play.
Curious how the details on each app are gathered? Here is how I check the apps for these pages.

Each app's prices appear in the currency it bills in, with no conversion. Price sorting only compares apps that share a currency.
Both apps are free to start. Character AI has three paid options, Janitor AI has one, all billed in US dollars.
Neither app asks much of your wallet, and that is worth saying first. The official pages of both describe free chat without a published daily cap. Many people will never need to pay at all, and I'd happily see you stay free if it covers what you want.
If you do pay, Character AI is the cheaper way in. The (c.ai) lite plan costs $4.99 a month and trims the ads. Spend $9.99 on c.ai+ and the ads and slow mode go, and you get the best memory tier. The c.ai+ Annual plan comes to $7.92 a month, billed $94.99 a year.
For a regular user who hates waiting at busy times, that yearly plan is the one I'd pick.
Janitor AI has one paid plan. Janitor+ is $12.99 a month, and it is all about better memory and priority, with no images or voice to add. The golden username and checkmark are a nice touch, but I would not pay for a badge. The 5x context is the real reason to upgrade.
I'd call it a plan for heavy roleplayers only. If your stories stay short, the free tier already does the job.
So here is my monthly split. Light chat: free on either app. Regular chat without ads: Character AI lite at $4.99. Long, detailed roleplay with adult content: Janitor+ at $12.99, since Character AI does not allow it at any price.
There are no coins or tokens on either record, which makes both bills easy to predict. What you see in the table above is what you pay. That is not true everywhere: my Candy AI vs OurDream AI comparison shows how tokens and coins change the real monthly cost on two other apps.

Try Janitor AI for free
A short word on leaving, because the two apps handle it differently. Character AI renews automatically until you cancel. On the web you go to Settings, then Account, then Manage, which opens a Customer Portal where you enter your account email.
If you subscribed through the App Store or Google Play, the cancel and any refund go through Apple or Google.
Janitor AI's web route is Settings, then Billing, then Manage Subscription, which hands you to Stripe to cancel. A subscription bought on a phone lives in the App Store or Google Play instead. Janitor AI's renewal terms are not on file, so I'd assume a subscription keeps running until you cancel it.
Neither app is generous with refunds. Character AI keeps your money unless a law forces a refund. Janitor AI says subscriptions are generally non-refundable, except where its terms or the law say otherwise. So my advice is the same for both.
Stay on the free plan until you know you want more, then buy a single month rather than a year. Both free tiers are big enough to make that easy.
Where I'd send a friend first
I'd ask them one question first: does the story need to go past a fade to black? If yes, it is Janitor AI, full stop, because Character AI's policy allows no adult content. If no, Character AI is the richer app.
My short list for a friend:
- Want voice, pictures and group chats? Character AI.
- Want adult roleplay without paying? Janitor AI.
- Want the cheapest paid plan? Character AI lite at $4.99.
- Want long stories that hold together? Either app, but budget for a paid plan and keep scenes short.
What I like about this pair is that neither forces a card on you. Both free tiers are big, so you can open both, spend an evening in each, and decide with real information. It costs nothing, and you will know within a few chats whether you prefer the extras or the freedom.
The one thing I'd avoid is a yearly plan on day one. Character AI's annual price is tempting, but refunds are rare on both sides. A month on c.ai+ or Janitor+ tells you far more than a pricing page can.
If what you really want is a companion who calls you and remembers you, both of these are character hubs more than companions. My Candy AI vs Nomi AI page compares two apps built around that idea instead.
Common questions
Is Janitor AI as a Character AI alternative a good idea?
It depends on why you are leaving. If Character AI's content policy is the problem, yes: Janitor AI allows adult content, including on its free plan, and Character AI allows none. If you rely on voice, images or group chats, no, because Janitor AI has none of them. It is a text-only character hub with a very large library of public bots.
Are both apps really free?
Both official pages describe free chat without a published daily cap. Character AI offers free and unlimited messaging on PipSqueak 2 and PipSqueak 2 Rawr, with ads and slow mode at busy times. Janitor AI offers unlimited JLLM chats and swipes. One secondary source puts Janitor AI nearer 50 messages a day, so sources differ on that point.
Which one has better memory?
Neither is strong. Character AI's paid plans offer 30 memory pins, and other reviewers praise its recall but note it sometimes invents details. Janitor AI's free model has about 9k of context, and reviewers say details can drift within 20-30 messages. Janitor+ offers 5x more context for $12.99 a month.
Does Character AI allow adult content on any plan?
No. Its content policy is none on every plan, free or paid. Paying for (c.ai) lite or c.ai+ changes ads, speed, memory pins and daily limits, not the content level. If that matters to you, Janitor AI is the one of these two that allows it.
What does each paid plan cost?
Character AI has (c.ai) lite at $4.99 a month, c.ai+ at $9.99 a month and c.ai+ Annual at $94.99 a year. Janitor AI has one paid plan, Janitor+, at $12.99 a month. Neither record lists coins or tokens on top.
Do these apps give refunds?
Rarely. Character AI only refunds where a law obliges it to, and app store purchases are refunded through Apple or Google. Janitor AI subscriptions are generally non-refundable, except where its terms or the law say otherwise.
What do people say about Janitor AI vs Character AI on Reddit?
I don't summarise Reddit threads, so I can't report what people there say. What I can give you is the official side: Character AI allows no adult content on any plan and offers voice, images and group chat, while Janitor AI allows adult content, even free, but is text only. Paid plans are $9.99 for c.ai+ and $12.99 for Janitor+. Read community threads for mood, then decide on these facts.
