Two character hubs with opposite rules

Chub AI and Character AI sit on the same shelf: both are character hubs built around roleplay, both let you make your own characters, and both list group chat. So why weigh them against each other at all? Because on the two things that matter most to many readers, content rules and the free start, they are mirror images.

Character AI allows no NSFW content, full stop. In return it gives away a lot: its FAQ promises free and unlimited messaging for all users, on web, iOS and Android, with ads and a slow mode when traffic is heavy. It is the generous, careful one of the pair.

Chub AI goes the other way. Its content policy allows NSFW roleplay, but the free start is thin. There is no standing free plan, only one-time trial credits worth a few dozen messages, sent out to new users regularly.

After that you either pay for Mars at $20 a month or host a model yourself through Kobold or Ooba, which is free if you have your own setup. It runs on the web only. Chub AI also lists paid API access, which Character AI does not offer, though that matters only if you build your own tools.

That is why I see Chub AI as a Character AI alternative mainly for one reader: someone who hit Character AI's content line and wants it gone. If that is not you, I struggle to see why you would trade unlimited free chat for trial credits and a $20 plan. Honest answer, not a knock on Chub AI.

The comparison table after this section lays the two apps out side by side, row by row. My tip: look at the content row and the free tier row together, since the whole choice lives there. Memory and group chat come out close, so they rarely decide it.

For the full story on the paid plan, the trial credits and the self-hosting route, see my Chub AI review, which goes further than this page can.

Does either app remember what you told it?

Chub AI lists memory as a feature. Character AI's memory has no rating on file, but its paid plans come with 30 memory pins, which I like as a practical tool. On conversation quality, the two get similarly mixed notes. Reviewers credit Character AI with strong recall of buried facts, while also catching it inventing plausible extras.

Chub AI is said to hold a character's voice well across many characters, yet other reviewers report dialogue confusion and repetition, including the AI writing both sides of a conversation. My call: a draw on quality, with Character AI's pins as the tiebreaker.

Building characters and chatting in groups

Here they match. Both apps list custom characters and group chat, and both are built as hubs where the character library is the point. If your habit is jumping between many characters or putting several in one scene, either one serves you.

The one practical difference is where you can reach your characters: Character AI on web, iOS and Android, Chub AI only in a browser. If you chat on the sofa more than at a desk, that small point favours Character AI.

Voice, images and the content line

On Character AI, voice calls and images are listed, and video comes with paid plans. Chub AI lists images and limited voice calls, with no video on file, and its Mars plan promises unlimited voice and multimedia generation. Reviewers compare the voices on both apps to audiobook narration: polished on Chub AI, uneven on Character AI.

Chub AI's Imagine tool reportedly looks like a photo at first sight but clearly AI-made up close, with inconsistent likeness. Content is the real split: Chub AI allows NSFW roleplay, Character AI allows none. That one row matters more than everything else here.

Privacy, billing and refunds

Neither app has data-handling details on file, so I cannot say which treats your chats better. On billing, a Character AI plan keeps renewing on its own until you stop it, and money paid is not refunded unless the law demands it. Chub AI's cancel and refund details come only from a secondary source: self-serve cancelling, and no refunds outside exceptional cases.

Neither is kind to a change of heart. More on the free app's plans sits in my Character AI review.

Character AI: generous, careful and cheap to upgrade

If your chats stay within SFW territory, Character AI is hard to beat on value, and I say that as someone who cares a lot about what a free tier really gives. The free plan offers unlimited messaging on its PipSqueak 2 and PipSqueak 2 Rawr models, on the web and on both phone platforms. What you pay instead is ads, slow mode and capped daily features. For something that costs nothing, I would happily take that deal.

Upgrading costs little. The lite plan at $4.99 cuts ads and adds 30 memory pins plus chat customization, and c.ai+ at $9.99 drops ads and slow mode entirely, with unlimited premium chat styles and premium support. Billed yearly, c.ai+ is $94.99 instead of $119.88, a 21% saving that I would take once the app has proven itself.

Where Character AI loses readers is the content policy, which allows no NSFW material. For many people that is fine, even welcome. For those who find it frustrating, no plan changes it, so do not pay hoping it will. Renewal is automatic until you cancel, so note the date if you only want c.ai+ for a month.

Two smaller catches. Long chats can drift, with a promise from ten messages earlier forgotten despite Auto Memories, going by one review. And one reviewer describes two different cards being declined repeatedly at c.ai+ checkout over three weeks. If you run into that, the app stores are another way to buy, with refunds then handled by Apple or Google.

Cancelling on the web runs through Settings > Account > Manage and on to the Customer Portal.

My full list of app matchups puts Character AI against several other names if you want a wider view.

Chub AI: open content, one price, a thin free start

Chub AI, from Chub AI Inc, is the pick for readers who want a character hub without Character AI's content line. Its policy allows NSFW roleplay, and other reviewers report that chat holds a character's voice well even as scenes turn more intense. For the reader who came here for exactly that, it is the straightforward answer.

The pricing is refreshingly simple: one plan, Mars, at $20 a month. For that you get every Chub language model with no cap, Soji among them, plus unlimited voice and multimedia generation and first access to new models. I like that nothing is metered on Mars.

What I do not like is that there is no cheaper step and no annual plan on file, so $20 is the entry price, full stop.

The free side is where Chub AI is weakest. There is no standing free plan, only one-time trial credits worth a few dozen messages, which new users are sent regularly. The genuinely free route is self-hosting a model through Kobold or Ooba. That suits tinkerers; most readers will find it a lot to ask just to chat. Custom characters and group chat are both listed, so the hub side matches Character AI.

Mind the refund rule before you subscribe. A secondary source quotes it as no refunds outside exceptional cases, and says the policy is firm. Cancelling is described as self-serve. I would use the trial credits fully before paying, so the $20 goes on something you already know you like.

It is web-only, with no app for either phone store on file, so on a phone you open it in your browser.

Each app's prices appear in the currency it bills in, with no conversion. Price sorting only compares apps that share a currency.

Official list prices. Chub AI has one paid plan; its trial credits and self-hosting are not listed as a plan.

The money side of this comparison is lopsided, and I want to spell it out in numbers rather than adjectives.

At $0, Character AI gives you unlimited messaging with ads and slow mode. Chub AI gives you one-time trial credits worth a few dozen messages, plus free self-hosting if you run your own model. For most readers, only one of those is a free plan you can live on.

At the entry level, Character AI's lite plan is $4.99 a month. Chub AI's only plan, Mars, is $20, which is $15.01 more. Against c.ai+ at $9.99, Mars costs $10.01 more each month. Twelve months of lite at $4.99 come to $59.88, just under three months of Mars at $60.

Over a year the gap grows. c.ai+ billed annually is $94.99. Chub AI has no annual plan on file, so 12 months of Mars at $20 comes to $240, which is $145.01 more than a year of c.ai+. That is a real sum, and I would only pay it for what Chub AI offers that Character AI does not: a policy that allows NSFW roleplay, and unlimited voice and multimedia generation on Mars.

So my reading is simple. If the content line does not bother you, Character AI is the cheaper app by a wide margin at every level. If it does, $20 a month for Mars is a fair price for unlimited models and media, and I would not call it overpriced. Just do not pay it by default.

And if images and video are the real reason you are shopping, compare apps built around them. My Candy AI vs OurDream AI page does that math with coin allowances included.

Chub AI One plan, unlimited models, voice and media · 7.1/10, starts at $20/mo Try Chub AI for free

Readers who like Chub AI's open policy but want a steady one-on-one companion rather than a hub often end up weighing Candy AI, which is why it takes the third spot in the quick answer below. EverAI Limited, based in Malta, runs it on the web. You build your own companion, and the paid plan covers unlimited text messages, voice calls, images and video, with adult content on paid plans only.

Its trial is short, in the same spirit as Chub AI's credits. The figure varies by source: 5 messages in total in one, and 3-5 messages with 3-5 images in the dated check from 2026-09-22.

Price is its strongest card. The yearly plan is €47.88 upfront, which is €3.99 a month and well under both c.ai+ and Mars, and a 70% sale on it was listed on 2026-09-23. Whatever length you choose, 100 tokens arrive each month, and the 3-Month Plan is the middle option at €26.97, or €8.99 a month.

Two things to weigh: refunds for non-EU/UK buyers close 24 hours after payment, and the bill shows as EverAI, which I find discreet.

Here is the advice I would give a friend standing between these two. Open Character AI first, because it costs nothing and you will learn quickly whether character chat is your thing at all. If its content line never gets in your way, stay there and spend nothing, or $9.99 at most.

If the line does bother you, that is the moment Chub AI makes sense, and I would move in this order:

  • Spend the one-time trial credits on Chub AI before paying anything.
  • If you are handy with your own setup, try free self-hosting through Kobold or Ooba first.
  • Only then subscribe to Mars at $20 a month, knowing refunds are limited to exceptional cases.
  • Keep Character AI's free plan for SFW chats; there is no reason to cancel something free.

The part I like about this route is that you never pay to discover a preference. Every step gives you real information before any money moves. And if you mostly chat on your phone, remember that Chub AI is web-only, while Character AI also has iOS and Android apps.

And if what you actually miss on both apps is a companion who remembers you over weeks rather than a library of characters, look elsewhere. My Candy AI vs Nomi AI comparison is the better next read, with Nomi AI's free plan of 50 messages a day as the easy first step.

Common questions

Why would someone switch from Character AI to Chub AI?

Almost always for the content rules. Character AI allows no NSFW content, while Chub AI's policy allows it. Both are character hubs with custom characters and group chat, so the switch keeps the format you know. The trade is money: Character AI's free messaging is unlimited, while Chub AI offers only one-time trial credits before Mars at $20 a month.

Is Chub AI free like Character AI?

No. Character AI's FAQ promises free and unlimited messaging for all users, with ads and slow mode. Chub AI has no standing free plan: new users are regularly sent one-time trial credits worth a few dozen messages. The free option that remains is self-hosting a model through Kobold or Ooba. If a free plan you can use every day is the priority, Character AI wins easily.

Can I use Chub AI on my phone?

Chub AI is listed as web-only, so there is no app store version on file; you would use the website. Character AI has apps for iOS and Android as well as the web. If you mostly chat on the go, that is another small point in Character AI's favour.

How much more does Chub AI cost than Character AI?

Chub AI's Mars plan is $20 a month, against $4.99 for Character AI's lite plan and $9.99 for c.ai+. Over a year, 12 months of Mars comes to $240, while c.ai+ billed annually is $94.99. That makes Chub AI $145.01 more per year. In return you get a policy that allows NSFW roleplay, plus unlimited voice and multimedia generation.

Which one has the better voice feature?

Neither stands out. Chub AI's Mars plan includes unlimited voice, and its voice output is described as a polished audiobook narrator, functional but not natural. Character AI lists voice calls, and its voices get mixed notes: some surprisingly good, some flat, with delays. If voice is your top priority, I would look at an app built around calls instead.

What is the refund policy on each app?

Character AI says payments are non-refundable except where required by law, and purchases made through the App Store or Google Play are refunded through Apple or Google. For Chub AI, only a secondary source is available, quoting no refunds outside exceptional cases and calling the policy firm. My advice for both is the same: use every free option before you pay.

Are there Chub AI presets to mimic Character AI?

Presets are not in my records for Chub AI, so I can't point you to one or promise it exists. If you want Chub AI presets for Character AI style replies, here is what is on file instead: Chub AI has custom characters, group chat, an open library you can narrow with tag filters, and all its language models on Mars. Character AI's premium chat styles come with its paid lite and c.ai+ plans. My take: build the character you liked, and judge the writing on the trial credits first.
